17 cal wildcat, name?
I am interested in another 17. This time I am thinking of running a 17 rem reamer short about .085" and just using 223 brass in a 17 rem die that has also been shortened.
Has this cartridge got a name, I am sure someone here has already done it? If so can they give me some direction? |

Dig into the old files for: Nevada Reloader I think was his handle.
He hasn't been on here for a few years now and as he was having health problems it's very likely he's cashed in his chips. He played with doing such things a lot. Would start with full sized reamers and brass. trimmed cases down a bit, reamed chambers short by .050 or .100" til they got too short to reduce any more. Then he'd pick something else to play with. I don't recall if he named each step or not. Check with Ray H, he's done a lot of such things too and been on here since about day one. Harold is another long timer with a lot of experience.

If necking down a 223 to 17 and keeping the shoulder, wouldn't it be like a 17 Practical.

Not a .17/223 due to the shoulder angle of the .17 Rem. reamer, seems to me.
Interesting, case, though and lots of .223 brass out there (at least here) just to be picked up.

No not a 17-223, this would be a short 17 Rem. It would have a longer neck than a 17-223. It would be similar to a 17-222 but a bit longer.
I already have a 6mm Cheapshot, gunsmithed by Jack Belk several years ago, He ran a 6x47 die with a .262 neck .085" short chambered. 223 brass works great and I just neck size with a Wilson die. That is where I got the idea for using a 17 Rem reamer. Last edited by Coyotejunki; 03-09-2021 at 11:34 PM. |

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t that right at a 17 triple deuce?
17 JC Cheap shot is very similar to what you’re doing but it’s more like .180” short of a 17 remington. It’s actually almost identical to the 17 Javelina Imp up to the shoulder... but has the long neck and shoulder angle of the 17 Remington and 17 triple deuce. It’s really an excellent looking cartridge. If you’re interested I have a set of dies that was given to me from a fine member here… Sunny this is name.

I thought I remember reading that someone was doing a shortened 17 Rem here several years back.

I have a very poor memory but I was thinking Kenny S. did a short 17 Rem and maybe used cut down the 17 Rem dies?

To what end? I always ask what is the practical purpose of such an endeavor. Seems the 17-223 is exactly that. Just running the reamer short may leave a step down in your brass as these cases are tapered; though there may be enough tolerance in a reamer so this isn’t a problem for the short length you mentioned.
