Agree, 17-223 would be easy, cheap brass, dies are available, without special order, etc. and it would be just about the same cartridge, without all the fooling around, forming dies, etc.

Or why not just keep your 17 Remington (other than just wanting to have something different) and down load it, if you want slightly less FPS ?

Well everyone has their own taste... the 17 Rem got me started down the road of small calibers.. I actually prefer my 17-222 over it but if I had to keep only one of the larger 17s it wouldn’t be either of those. It would be Ray’s 17 Jav Imp. But then I don’t mind the case forming.

That said, I don’t like buying custom ... but sometimes it just a fun rewarding thing to do even if it does cost me my right arm and a leg lol

Hey Gary, just curious....why do you prefer the 17-222 over the 17 Rem? Like you, I got started on the 17 Rem, back about 1981 or so....then the 17AH, which I really like for closer work and about 50% less noise. And then there is the 17M2, which is the real jewel in the RF category....I have lots of 222 brass.....and you have me thinking again....dogone it, this place has me spending lots of money!

It mostly because I only shoot 25 gr vmax bullets and the performance I get from the 17 triple deuce it’s right on the heels of the 17 remington. I’ve had plenty of consecutive one shot kills with the 70 triple deuce in the 500 yard range where I just don’t see the need for a 17 Remington or should I say a desire to shoot it all that much....

Take it a step farther and the performance I get with Ray’s 17 Jav IMP leaves the 17 triple deuce in the safe more than it deserves. That said if I’m shooting those small 500 yard targets I’d go for my 17 triple duce only because of the stock design and heavy barrel preference over the light weight CZ 17 Jav Imp

I have several 17 Remingtons and I prefer them over the 17-223 mostly because of the long neck BUT one of them is in an AR-15 and with that, I think I’d prefer the 17-223 thinking it wouldn’t hurt as bad losing a piece of brass LOL I have planted some 17 Rem brass in PD holes and they don’t grow lol

Much of this is personal preference (and I’m just as all caliber junkie) but the 17 Jav Imp case capacity has worked out very well for me.

I have always wanted to build a 17 Rem Imp around a certain powder bullet combo but that was like 20 years ago and so far have got by without it LOL

The 17 Jav Imp isn’t the only cartilage I spot in that case capacity, one is a rimmed case that performs amazingly well!

Off the subject a bit.

Back about 2009 or so when I was looking for a small .17.

I asked the members here if they'd send me one of each of

their .17 cases. Ended up with about 33 of them in all.

Paul was still here and experimenting with his many brainstorms.

He sent me several. Even one on a 25acp. Flea he called it: worthless too.

Half a grain I think he loaded it with, no idea now what powder though.

I ended up with foxhunter's Cooper M -38 .17/Velociraptor. And my own

version made on a NEF HMR. Later both were chambered the exact same.

I may get some heat for this, but you guys get too hung up on thousads of an inch. I am with Ray on this, it is called a 17 Practical. He is only running the reamer in .085 short, you can barely see that after the case is formed, if you can even see the difference.

So Qaz, the 17 Practical and the 17-223 are different? I had a 17-223 in an AR-15, it is not what I am talking about.

from left to right 17-222, 17 Rem, 17-223, 17-204

Looking at these, I think I just may do a 17-222 next, now to find a reamer.

I have a 20 Practical on the AR-15 and eventually got the 5.56 upper. I personally don’t care for the short necks of either one.

For me the 17-222 would be a great option. My first AR-15 was/is a 17 Rem. Super accurate and fun to shoot.... but I really prefer the performance from the 17-222 using less powder... maybe less barrel heat?

The best thing is, I don’t have to worry what anyone rise thinks... if splitting hairs of an issue with someone then it’s their issue it sure doesn’t bother me
