Default .17-225 Win. Wildcats

Seems like the 225 Win. case would be the ideal length of strong rimmed case to shorten and use to make a bunch of wildcats off of. Anyone ever try this?

Check out JD Jones (SKS Industries)
. He has been wildcatting many cartridges with both the 225 Win and 444 Marlin for years. from small to large and has also used them on game from the states to Africa. Bill K

Yes, i know of him quite well from shooting specialty pistols over the years. I've never heard of him working much with the subcalibers much though. Seems like he likes to work with a lot of larger calibers more so. I'm actually surprised there's not much info on shortening the 225 and using it for subcals. more. Doesn't seem to be much info on that subject anywhere really. Seems like the ideal case to work with though for such a project.

FPS,
What is the powder capacity of the 17 Chuckbuster?
Is it close to a 17-22-250?

That has to be close to the .22-250. Neat looking cartridge.

I wonder if that's just a straight-up 225 case, improved to a 40 degree or more shoulder angle. Doesn't look like he shortened it at all. If that's the case maybe i'll do something similar without any improving. As a dedicated predator gun it should last awhile. Maybe 3600 or so out of a 30 with an 18" barrel.

The PeeWee looks right in the photo, but the 17 Chuckbuster looks odd.

SS- The round you are talking about making, is about the same as the 17 base on the 30-30 case is it not? I can't recall off hand what the name of the line of cartridges is though.

Qaz--yes it does look odd. Like a big fat rectangle. It may very well have been shortened, and improved to an extreme [60 degree shoulder?]. Don't know if there's a line of 17's based on the 225. Seems like there oughtta' be though, huh...? I got started thinking about a project like this when Aaron gave me a 17 Jet case this summer. My XP pistol is a 17 FB, and i can get 3400ish out of a 30 grainer. But if i could net 3600 out of a slightly larger case then i could sell my bigger 22 specialty pistols, and have just one gun for calling and sniping dogs to 400 +/-. May have to take a look at the 25-35 Win. case too. Looks like it might work as well.

Steve,
You could also do a longer version of the jet. Use 357 max brass and make the body of the case a bit longer. When I made those cases I had to cut off quite a bit to make them that short. I bet you could make them at least 1/4" longer, maybe 3/8". The max case is very strong. I believe it would take a ppc size bolt face.
