Mr. Sterner, I was afraid of this, the shop had the wrong type, I confirmed this when I called this morning.
I am looking for the 22 Hornet cases that are headstamped WW SUPER, not the WIN brass. FYI, the WIN brass is what you have, if anyone is interested. |

Sorry Chuck...didn't even occur to me to look at the head stamp. Just wondering...does it really matter, is there a dimensional difference? Or are you trying to segregate brass types for different rifles?

I guess need educated, what's the difference between W-W and Winchester? In what way is the W-W superior? Seen the different head stamps but never thought anything but a change in the die that stamped it. Always willing to learn something. Thanks Chuck

WW is "older" and not prone to have issues
Win is "newer" and prone to split when forming to K The new Win I have splits anywhere from 5-10 out of 100 when initially forming in several K hornets I've had.....CZ and Ruger. Other than initial splitting on the case during first fireform, the new Win stamped brass has served me well. I've never shot it in a standard hornet, I use R-P brass for my standard hornets. |

There is a slight difference, almost incalculable, but since it is calculable and I'm OCD, then I do indeed like to keep things separate with regards to my 22SQ (WW super cases) and my 20Mink (WIN cases).
The difference is slight in the neck thickness between the two. The variances are even greater when talking about RWS, Sellier&Bellot, Hornady, etc. Even though they're all 22Hornet, the variances can be stark. I just like making everything exact as possible when hand loading these smaller cartridges - weighing cases, powder charges extremely consistent, primer pocket uniforming, flash hole deburring, etc. The +/- tolerances are very tight when I hand load these because there is little wiggle room when you're dealing with small numbers/calibers. A 10th of a grain of powder charge has a much bigger effect on a 22SQ vs. a 20PPC or a BR. So, is there a difference? Technically yes, but if you're shooting squirrels or red winged black birds it doesn't matter. However, if you're shooting colored toothpicks at 100 yards for bragging rights, there is indeed a difference. Here is a link that shows the headstamp of the WW Chuck Last edited by HoosierChuck; 11-13-2019 at 04:06 PM. |

Thanks Chuck, I thought maybe you had section some of each W-W and Winchester and there may have been a dimensional difference in the base etc. I've built 7 different cases based on the Hornet over the years. Like you I like all my brass to be same lot as much as possible. Years ago I had bought 5-6000 cases, luckily I guess, they were the W-W version. I had thought recently of trying some of the S&B after hearing several members here having good luck with them. There was once a member here that did a great job of sectioning different brands of cases. His work was well thought out but I couldn't it doing a search on here. Thanks Chuck.
