Default Model 7 Rear Action Screw

I put an HS stock with aluminum block on my model 7 and have stripped two rear screws in the process trying to torque to the recommended 65in/lbs. I realize now that it's way too much to ask for an allen head that small to have that much torque.

Before I buy my 3rd allen screw I thought reaching out to you guys for any alternative options and a recommended torque for the rear guard screw. The barreled action is laying over devcon aluminum.

Are there any aftermarket alternatives for the allen screw aside from opening up the rear hole to 1/4-28?

Thanks!

1/4 X 28 probably best way to go.
On my M7 with small tang screw I tighten the front one snug, then tighten the tang one less snug, then fully tighten the front one and then snug the tang one. I don't use a torque wrench. If it doesn't shoot I release the tang screw slightly.
Just had trouble with a Boyds stock, when tightening the tang screw just moderately, it was enough to bend the action so the bolt went over instead of cocking. Pillars fixed that.
Ken.
Ps. Read somewhere that stainless screws should be torqued less!

Remington's recommendation is 30-35 in. lbs. Not sure where the 65 came from but that is way too much for that size fastener. I set my model 7 rears at 25.

Torque table for various screw sizes:

kenbro, stainless is WEAKER than cold rolled steel. It's a common misconception that stainless is stronger.

BTDT... had to drill the head off. DocEd said tighten front good, snug the rear plus a little. Having Adam tap my new 20vt out to 1/4x28.

I just punch those SOB's out to .25x28. That way there's no special screw that needs bought when lost or damaged.
