I shoot both out of 1:16 twist Hornets and have never had a Hornet that would not stabilise them. The 40 grain tipped bullets are the same length or shorter than most of the 50 grain ones used in a lot of the old Hornet loads and that is what determines stability, length not weight.

Ya I did not really know. Mine are 1-12 so I never have any issues. I have read some guys with CZ's with 1-16 don't care for the 40 grain tipped bullets and wondered why?

The issue with the CZ Hornets is magazine length, not stabilization of the 40gr VMAX or NBT. The CZ mag is too short, so unless you modify a CZ mag, you have to load CZ's single shot.

I never tried the 40 gr bullet in my cz. I started with the 34 gr dogtown bullet and it shot bug holes and fits well in my mag. I'm not bright but smart enough to quite while I'm ahead.

I trimmed another guy I load for to 1.385 and my own to 1.380 the last time, loads are very accurate. I use a Lee Collet die to neck size only, then seat using a Redding Competition Seater die.

I've shot the Midway dogtowns (34gr HP's) very accurately at 1.735" OAL. Something in the 13-13.2 range of LilGun using Rem 6 1/2 primers.
This was with Frontier brass recycled from shooting Hornady's factory 35VM's.

I use 11.0 of IMR-4227 with Rem 6 1/2's under a Hornady 45SP at 1.765.
10.0 of IMR-4227 with 6 1/2's under a Sierra 45 SP is slow & good,1.765.

12.5 and 12.9 of Lil'Gun with Sierra 45 SP's & CCI 500 SP primers, 1.765.

I've gone all the way up to 13.4 Lil'Gun w/Hornady 45's & CCI 500's at 1.765
(1.765" OAL is about my max magazine length by the way.)

My gun liked 40 V-MAX's with 13.2 of LilGun and Rem 6 1/2's at 1.735 & .765.
And 35 V-MAX's at 13.0 of LilGun with Rem 6 1/2's at 1.735.
This was with Remington brass, from early on in my experimenting.

But probably the best load I have found yet for my CZ 527 22 hornet is...
13.2 of LilGun under a Sierra 40HP as lit by a CCI 500 Small Pistol primer,
in Hornady brand/stamped brass trimmed to 1.380, with an OAL of 1.735".

The Sierra 40HP is a hard bullet - amazingly accurate, and seems to be about the least affected by wind of any bullet I've seen in the 22 hornet. I got the Berger 40 MEF bullets flying well too, but I really don't think they have a thing over the 40HP's from Sierra and so I will probably try to use the Bergers next in my 222rem.

I started to play around with a Sierra 50 (not the Blitz which I've shot gazillions of in my 222, but rather a hard 50 for fur) with about 11.0 of IMR-4227. I think this one will come together in another turn or two of the crank/charge weight, but I never really finished this one. I was hoping the Sierra 40HP would be hard enough to be good for fur, and with its extreme accuracy and good wind bucking characteristics, that might still be what I go back to ultimately - to just take head shots on everything then. But right now I'm using Hornady 45SP's at 11.0 of 4227 for fur, because a broadside hit on a red with the 13.2 LilGun Sierra 40HP load made a horrible mess on exit.

But the simple answer to your question is - I've trimmed 22 hornet cases down to as low as 1.380" with no issues in my CZ.

Smile update

From the time I started this post I have been on a mission with this hornet to convince myself it could be a respectable gun. 3 powders, 5 primers and 6 bullets. A combination of all the above needless to say, took quite a while. Loading, running to the barn and finding out after two to three shots that that load wasn't going to work. After a long process of elimination, today I finally felt the load I ended up with was the best I could do. I used,
POWDERS
Lil Gun
CFE Black
VV- N110
PRIMERS
Federal 100M and 205
CCI 500 and BR-4
Remington 6 1/2
BULLETS
Hornady 40 gr. V-MAX and 45 gr. Hornet
Sierra 45 gr. hornet 1210, 40 gr. 40 gr. Blitz King1440 and 45 grain spitzer1310 and 40gr. softr point 1200
Finally, Winchester brass, CCI spp 500, VV N-110, Blitz King #1440 and a lgth of 1.800 with the new bullet crimp I am happy. It chrono's at 2450 fps and I am getting .250 at 50yds. .675 at 100yds. and .750 at 150 yds. Lots of reloading, frustration and gas for the Rhino because 150 yds up and back as much as I have done in the last 4 weeks is to much for this old man.

Default Notes

Things I learned from this 6 week outing. CFE Black would give some good groups but when I put these loads on the chrono I was getting as much as 100fps spikes and it was constant with multiple powder, bullet, primer combinations. I couldn't handle that.
Another thing that was frustrating, I could get a real good 50 yd. group with a load and when I stretched it out it would open up considerably.
Purchasing the bullet crimper was a great help. I believe it tightened my groups by as much as .250 to .375.
I was finally using CCI 500 and Federal 100M at last and the same load would open from CCI to Federal by as much as .300.
The more I use VV power the more I am prone to just stay with it. Right now I am using a variety of it in the 17 Remington, 223, 22-250
I am using a Leupold VX 3 4.5 to 14 x 40 30mm SF and it has a fine cross hair and dot reticle. That dam dot is 1" at 150 yds and it is hard to focus with the target I was using. 70 year old eyes. BUT, I am still happy!

I am glad u got it grouping but the velocity u are getting is really low. I am getting 3100 fps with 40 grain tipped bullets and Lil'Gun. If all I could get was 2450 I would stick to a 22 mag.

My thought also, but if you are just punching paper then velocity doesn't matter much.

I am getting those and better velocities out of my 10" Anschutz Exemplar and my 14" Contender.

You might find another accuracy node at a higher velocity?

I hear what you gentlemen are saying but after running ballistics and shooting at 50 yds, 100 yds and 150 yds things are looking too good. I am a 1/2" high at 50, 5/8" high at 100 and 1-1/2" low at 150 yds. According to ballistics programs, until I can shoot something myself, it shows 435 ft. lbs. at 50, 351 ft. lbs. at 100 and 281 ft. lbs at 150 yds. I want to use this at the farm and I don't have a shot there that is over 150 yds without cover. They say as a rule that it is a 150 yd. gun for coyotes and the speed seems to cover that. I have custom 17 Rem and a 22-250 at just under 4000 fps for hot rods. My 22 Mag is only getting 90 ft. lbs at that distance and if it will kill a coyote at 90 ft. lbs. then 281 ought to do it. I tried to go higher in velocity and the bullets as a whole just opened up on me and I would much rather have small groups than fast spread. Thanks for your posts. Ole 2 Shot
