Just go straight to Trail Boss loads, as the operating pressures for the other powders will leave significant powder residues caused by the low pressure burning and aren't bulky enough to prevent a double charge. IIRC 2.4 grains of Trail Boss in my 22 Hornet with a 50 gr. cast bullet was about 1000 fps.

Hope you intend on using a bolt action rifle and not an AR. I don't think an AR will function/cycle unless it is around 2000+fps.

Default You might check James Calhoons site..

He wrote an in depth article on the use of Blue Dot in a 223,depending on the bullet weight I think you could get them subsonic.I'm assuming you have a suppressed rifle.

This is spot on.... i use Trailboss also. A great powder to accomplish what you are wanting done. 7.5gr and a 50gr bullet is an excellent accuracy load but not subsonic. You are probably going to have to go down in the 4.5gr area depending on you barrel length.

hodgdon has some sub load data. want to say trail boss and titegroup were the powders used. also i'd use the 55gr soft point assuming it's a flat base. if your going to run a suppressor always make sure to check for stability/keyholing before using it with your can. the shorter the bullet the better as at subsonic velocities especially in a 1:9 and slower twist stability can become an issue.

with subs start high and work down till below the speed of sound. keep an eye out for squibs. you may find that pistol primers will give better ignition and lower es/sd but i'd use the 400's if thats all you got.

had some spare time. copy and pasted from hogdon's site. i'd probably bump them up a few 10th's and work down but it doesn't mention it so YMMV

hornady 55gr
Case: Winchester Twist: 1:12" Primer: Winchester SR, Small Rifle Barrel Length: 24" Trim Length: 1.750"

Hodgdon Trail Boss .224" 2.200" 4.0 1,074
Hodgdon Titegroup .224" 2.200" 3.1 1,064 4,000 CUP
Hodgdon Clays .224" 2.200" 3.2 1,060 3,700 CUP

3.5 grains Trail Boss, 40 grain Vmax. Very accurate to 150 yds, almost no sound out of a 24" barrel. Don't own anything but bolts so can't say if it will cycle the AR but it will work as a repeater by using the charging handle no problem.

Default .223 subsonic

Hi All,
I worked with this a few years ago in a couple Ar's. 20 inch 1-9twist and
a 16-1/2 1-7twist. 55grain Hornady SX seemed to work the best as they are short and don't need as fast a twist. Loaded both Ar's at 1000fps. 16inch was a little sharper report with a shorter barrel. I used Trial Boss and a chronograph. I remember just a slight bit more powder for the longer barrel
but not very much. Vmax style bullets were two long and did not shoot as well.
SX's were short. And shot well. The 1-7 shot a little better and was harder on the vermin. The 20inch was slightly quieter.

Tried 2 other powders that were fast and I think Bullsey was one of then but
you had to realy watch for double loads. And they were single shots with these loads. Another bullet I tried was the Hornady .218 Bee large hollow point.
worked the best on the vermin, and that one I used Bullsey. But that was a while ago and I would have to do a major back note search. I think wou can still find that bullet.

Good luck as subsonic is fun,(Dads pellet rifle)

Rick
