Default Just how far will a bullet go before it hits the ground?

I'm sure this has been solved in the past, but just got to thinking about it yesterday when shooting crows...frequently one is shooting at an upward angle, and if you hit, no worries about where the bullet ends up, but if you miss, there is always the thought of where did the bullet land?

Now for some of you who are physics professors....seems I recall that the angle of inclination of 32* gives the maximum travel distance across the ground, (simply demonstrated with the garden hose). I know it all depends on velocity, BC, bullet weight, etc. But back when I was a kid, always wondered about the warning on the 22 long rifle boxes that the maximum range was one mile....that's a long way!

So, just for the heck of it, I would like to know from you guys that have a better grasp of the whole picture than I do, what would be the max distance a 55gr Sierra BT at 4500f/s, inclined at 32* probably be across the ground? I know that these parameters are overboard, but was interested in the "longest fall" area possible with a small cal.

Thanks,
Steve

I seem to recall the warning on a box of 30-06 said 3 miles.

In one case, a mile and a half.

JBM has a calculator for this:

And yes, it depends on the air density, speed and BC of the bullet, initial angle, etc. A sleek 7mm can go almost 5 miles.

Thanks guys for the calculator....the 55gr bullet apparently will make it a bit over 2 miles at the parameters I included. Gives one more to consider when not having a backstop.....

When shooting at crows, or anything else, the bullet should only go as far as the back stop (hill, bank, etc.) you have determined to be safe. Not trying to preach but, why would anyone pull the trigger on anything other than a shotgun with blue sky behind the intended target?

Way back in the 50-60 era we fired quite a lot at thrown
targets. stupid, but, wild assed kids do such things.

Far as i know nothing was ever harmed with OUR shooting
that way.

I've been reading some older Rifleman mags recently.
Some years ago in one of them had a list of distances for
several cartridges. Good to see there's now a calculator
for such things.

too bad about that girl. We had someone hit here a few years ago too.
Don't recall if he was killed, or wounded.

There use to be a national Guards 1000 yd range near Hastings, Ne that a gun club could arrange to use to have a 1000yd match, until it, until some jackass shot an AK up in the air, "by mistake" and it entered the roof and hit a desk in the office at the range. PCP air rifles are wonderful for shooting up in trees to shoot birds.

Good post, ramos. It needed to be said.
