Default !7 Remington in a Model 7

A few years ago, I bought one of those Model 7 actions Brownells was selling. It was stamped for the 300 BLK.
I at the time had found a supposed to be a "New Rifle" take off from a 700, in 17 Remington.
Recently, I picked up parts enough to put it together.
Local smith screwed the barrel on. The head space is a little long, but acceptable.

The 7 came with a 20 mil base. I off set this with Burris Signature rings, and 20+- inserts on the front..

Haven't made it to the range, but that is next.

Here's a pic.

Nice! If the headspace is a touch long you MAY be able to take a FEW thousandths off the recoil lug.

Default 17 Remington in a Model 7

Sort of spooking the comment "Headspace is a little long, but acceptable". Headspace should be correct and not questionable in a rifle, for the good of the shooter, rifle and bystanders, if it blew up.
Why did the gunsmith just set the barrel back, just enough, to take out the headspace issue ? I think I would ask him and have him do so, before I stared shooting that weapon. Bill K

Yes ! Head space is not something to mess with !

I did put 5 rounds through it, and they are fine ! I full length sized two, and by my case comparator, the fired and full length sized cases were the same.
The primers didn't back out either.

Thanks !

Finally made it out to sight in the 17 rem, and a 700 ADL Heavy barrel 223 (Cabelas Special)

That 17 Rem new take off barrel is great !
I wouldn't have expected a custom barrel to shot any better !
Off the ground with a bipod. I put an old VX I 3x9 on top of the model 7 300 BLK action, from Brownells
A local smith advised IMR 8208. I started with a minimun load behind a 20gr V-max.
Here's a pic. The top right three, are 223, out of The Cabelas Special.
The bottom left three are from the 17. 100yds

A good day.
We had nearly 12" of snow last night, and today, total. Better start looking for some yotes !
