20VT Rat Report
The shoot we just returned from was fraught with early wind and rain. But on the second day, the sun came out, the wind died down (somewhat), and as a result, the rats were out in force.....finally!
The landowner was kind enough to set up his flatbed equipment trailer for us to set our benches on for some needed elevation. Great guy. The result was we could now see the little buggers out in the grass and alfalfa, not just their little rodent heads. Nothing like a wet, juicy body shot at 250 (grin). The morning view from my bench set up on the trailer with my Cooper M38 VR in 20VT (32gr NBT, 18.5grs RL-7, Rem 7-1/2, Lapua case for 3,715 fps): At the far end of this field where the large logs/posts are seen stuck in the ground was lasered at 283 yards. No big deal, but that area was absolutely loooooaded with squirrels. I'd launch one and six more would scamper about. Just enough time to eject the fired case, load a fresh on, acquire the new rat and engage. Good thing barrel heat is not much of an issue with the 20VT. I'm thinking about 30+ squirrels were launched from that little area that morning. We had squirrels out in front of us, behind us in the rocks, in the sage on the hillside, and rock chucks high on the bluff. It was truly a "target-rich" environment. Gary shooting down the two-track with his Cooper M38 Classic in 22 K-Hornet (I can't trade it out from under him either!) Always a source of entertainment, Gary's son Dan decided to put away his M700V 223 and haul out his "ultimate chuck rifle", his Defiance 338 Lapua...NOT small caliber! He toyed with a shy rock chuck at 686 yards on the high bluff behind us. The chuck remained in good health though, as he never did present himself long enough to get set up and make the shot. Dan is our "fun guy".... (note wind flag....almost perfect conditions). It was another excellent trip. Now with all the moisture we've had here, the grass and alfalfa will be too long in another few weeks to see the rodents. Time for local rock chucks then (big grin). I've got beaucoup pics, but we can only put up four on this forum, so if anyone is interested, I can do a "part II". There's nothing quite like spending a few days behind a favorite rifle with a field full of not so willing targets basking in the sunshine. Rat Report: They're UP!

Part II Glad you had a decent shoot Rick. It's been an interesting start to the year. I've only been out a few times due to lousy weather. |

Yes, on to more photos.
Can you tell me about the benches your shooting off of. Those look to be much more sturdy than the cabela specials.

Thanks you guys. With all this recent lousy weather, it was great to finally get out for some quality time afield.
Working on Pt II now....hope you approve. Quote:
Midway came up with an el cheapo version too, called the "Stable Table"; light and fairly steady, but lacks all the features of the original. I sometimes see the originals available on ebay and Craig's List. Now on to Part II......
