I used that case to load the 17 VHA cartridge when I was playing with one about 2 yrs back. Went to the 17 FB and 17 HMR for fun.

That small cartridge is use by secret service and others in their small under the coat, full and selective auto, firearm a lot. And by other agencies around the world. Mostly for protection of VIP's, Presidents.

I don't use the 18 cal version, but I do have extensive experience with the 4.6x30 necked down to .172

I shoot 20 gr bullets mostly, will be loading some 24gr soon. One bolt gun likes 300 MP, one shoots 1680 and my AR like CFE BLK.

Depending on your bullet weight, one of those should work. Be advised the nodes can be very narrow on this small case, but it's a great performer.

I haven't kept up on the factory offerings, what rifle platform is your new 4.6x30 ?

So, it's not a 4.6x30, it's a 4.4x30.
.172" = 4.3688mm

Is the brass durable? Read three or four firings then toss it.

I have a post on here somewhere when I built my first bolt action 17 VHA ( 4.6x30 necked down to .172) and I took the very same case, loaded and shot it 10 times in a row, and showed the target.

I have over 5 firings on some of my 17 VHA brass, I now have an AMP machine, so will be annealing it now and looking for much more use out of the brass.

If you load at higher pressures, you will expand the base and primers will leak. I also have a base reduction die for that, but I've learned to just run it where it wants to run, and if I need more horsepower in the 172 realm, I can move up to the 17/23 SMc, and then the 17 Tac.

It's the most efficient case I have, just used one on a grey fox trip, 8.8grs of 300MP equaled 3450fps with a 20gr Vmax.

17 VHA in action. Rem 700 single shot, Lilja barrel , 20gr Vmax 3450.. You will be hard pressed to convince me there is a better fox cartridge, in the world...it's as good as it gets.
