Default 17 caliber barrel questions ???

Looking into 17 caliber barrels from different manufacturers and I'm a little confused ! I have decided that I want an 8.5 or 9 twist for sure but how many grooves I'm not sure of . What would be better ? 3 groove ? 4 groove ? Or 6 groove ? And what difference does the number of grooves make ?

1/9 is just about the best overall twist for 17 cal.
I prefer a 3 groove when I can obtain them in my 17 & 20 calibers.
Too me is just seems to work best and they clean up easier, I believe.

I would go 3 groove. They clean up easier..

Are you.planning to shoot sligbtly long and heavy for caliber bullets in it with the 8 .5 twist? If not, I'd go 9" twist for norall hurting bullets up to 30 grains.

Yup, 3 groove 1:9 for up to 30gr bullets like VMAX or NBT.

One of the barrel makers I talked with offers 8.5 or 10 twist . 6 groove in 8 twist and 4 or 6 groove in 10 twist .

I ended up ordering from Lilja . I ordered a 9 twist 4 groove barrel . They didnt offer anything other than 4 groove in 17 caliber .

Thank you to everyone for the replies !

I went with the Lilja on a recommendation from Kevin Weaver . He will be the one chambering the barrel for me when it arrives .

Kevin is a very good gunsmith and does a lot of small bore builds I am sure you will be very happy with whatever he builds you.

As for barrels it seems Lilja and PacNor, when it comes to .17 or .20 caliber builds, are the two barrel companies that are generally at the top of most smiths list.

Curious, which .17 cal cartridge is Kevin building for you?
