Default 30X357 Maximum

The 30X357 Maximum, even though a "smaller cartridge", can match the ballistics of the larger 30-30 Winchester! How? The 30X357 Maximum has a safe operating pressure limit of 53,000 psi while the pressure limit of the 30-30 is 42,000 psi...

I have been able to match 30-30 trapper ballistics even with the 300 blackout (much like your 30/357 mag) and that's even within the mag length limitations of the AR. but it took a heavily compressed load of 1680 with mags de-ribbed to allow 2.26" coal. got a 168gr up to 1984 ft/sec avg. did get 1 load to 2011 ft/sec but it was denting the bullets during seating so I went back to the next load down. I had to seat bullets 2/3's the way then touched them to my tumbler while it was running to settle in the powder then seat the rest the way followed by an immediate crimp. lol

I did this for my daughters first deer hunt. didn't find nothing but was still a good time.

17VLD - I don't guess I've ever been on that forum, but I do build a lot of the T/C Contenders chambered for the 30X357 Maximum...

Doug - I have done a head to head comparison between the 30 Herrett and the 30X357 Maximum in 18" and 21" barrels, with bullet weights from 110 gr. to 165 gr. and in both barrel lengths, with all bullet weights, the 30X357 Maximum was a solid 200 to 300 fps. faster than that of the 30 Herrett...

Ken,

Sorry for the late response!

I do not know what QL is. I think that stands for Quick Load, but I do not know anything about it, what it is or how it works...

David,

Very interesting cartridge you are working on.

QuickLoad is a PC software package available from

http://www.neconos.com/details3.htm.

I went without it for many years but finally bought it last year. It is really great for helping develop loads for unusual cartridges. It takes some time to learn to use and a good understanding of chamber pressures and what affects them. I enjoy using it and have found several loads that I thought I knew everything about abut have been improved by using Quickloads.

Hi Lowell,

I make pressure trace barrels for most of the wildcat cartridges that I work with, and it helps me get started in the right direction as far as pressures go, and it seems a lot easier than what I have seen with QuickLoad.
