I looked and found the thread but it still wasn't that enlightening. The only image of the 'device' was missing.

Mick,
Just drill a hole in a 1/4" bar if steel plate the size of .228" and place it over a bucket filled full of water, wear ear plugs, and some leather chaps and gloves. Use a light ball peen carpenter's hammer and your bucket of water, you are then ready to collect the 17gr vmax with a quick tap of the hammer. |

Maybe even safety glasses too! Thanks. I'll pass it on. I'm not about to do this myself - I'd much rather watch from a safe distance

What could possibly go wrong?
Y-e-s.... while that method is certainly quick not sure it's the safest!
I used a small pipe cutter to cut off the loaded 17HMR rounds below the shoulder then cut with a fine triangular file to create a tear-line and just pulled the shoulder area apart with fine nosed pliers. Quite quick once you get the hang of it.. and less likely to put one through your knee! Last edited by Tilleyman; 08-13-2016 at 10:59 AM. Reason: Typo.. |

I drilled a hole in a piece of steel plate about 1/4 inch thick that the loaded round goes into. The rim sits on top. I used a bolt head that had a raised bar ground into the head to use as a firing device, the bolt was mounted in a hinge that would position the bolt head over the loaded round in the hole in the plate. I put the plate on a buck of water, drop the round in the hole, fold the hinge in place over the cartridge head and whack the bolt with a hammer. The round fires and ruptures the case neck and the bullet falls into the water totally undamaged. Doesn't really make much noise at all. You may get a little wet if the plate does not cover the entire top of the bucket. P.S. Not too sure cutting a loaded round in half is all that safe either. Larry

I use a collet to pull them. Yes, it leaves a mark on the bullet, but it does not seem to have any negative effects on accuracy.

I have shot a BUNCH of 17 grain Vmax bullets in a CF (as well as the 15 NTX) These bullets are outstanding in a CF but IMO I believe it's a complete waste of time pulling these bullets just to use in a 17 hornet. The 20 gr bullets are like perfect for this sized case.
I have never pulled or wasted a good rf round to gain a bullet to reload with. Hornady would never sell these bullets because the Engineer that designed them had them built around 2600 fps. I know and I did do some testing with them and they held togethet well above 4,000 fps. Because of the light weight, (only 3 grains less) they just don't perform nearly as well as the 20s (in my experiance). They are great however in my smaller 17s like the 17 CCM and the Squirrel. But if I was going to shoot a <20 gr bullet in the hornet it'd be the 15 NTX. It seemed to reach out a little better then the 17 Vmax.

What collet brand do you use, my RCBS will NOT pull those bullets, without totally squishing them in 17 WSM ammo. Tia, Don

17 grain Vmax in 17 Ackley Hornet,....
Shoot just fine. We bought some 'seconds' with NO cannelure mark [never loaded before] and even loaded them up to 4,250 in a 17 Mach IV.... still held together.
HOWEVER, the standard old 17 cal 20 Grain VMAX is best for the 17AH and probably the 17HH. You notice a slightly more 'SPLATAGE' with the 20 grain over the 17 grainers. Same with Berger 15 grain HP's..... just not as much energy hitting the ground squirrel with the fly weight bullets. Standard load: 17 Ackley Hornet and 17HH, 20 gr. VMax 17 Mach IV and 17 Fireball, 25 gr.VMax. Seems to be best on ground squirrels. Have not tried on prairie dogs. |
