Default Anyone been on the Rosebud?

Usually this time of the year there are a lot of posts about PD shooting in South Dakota, particularly on or near the Rosebud Rez. Little to nothing, at least that I've seen, so far this year.

What's happening?

One thing that I can tell you is near record rainfall for this time of year. 100 miles east rivers overflowing their banks and spotty areas of crop ground flooding out. On my property SE of the rez about 80 mi grass and crops are very high for this date on the calendar. Less significant to PD shooting is severe weather has been rampant with several towns being hit hard by Tornados and lots of hail this year.

Default Rosebud

I have shot it many years. Last year (2013) was poor.
This year the guide I use called me in mid May and said "don't bother coming."
Apparently the plague hit the Rosebud pretty hard.

I was out in SD summer two years ago. There were a bunch of dog towns that had the plague. Doesn't surprise me that Rosebud got it as they weren't that far from where I shot.

I was out there on June 9 and 10th. It had rained all day on June 8 so it was really muddy most everywhere. I worked with a lousy outfitter that had access on the eastern side of the Rosebud which he claimed hadn't been hit as hard with plague or poisoning as the western part. Really just so-so luck on June 9th. Got stuck in a mudhole at a gate entry on morning of June 10 - so just gave up; he did pull me out! Reservation licenses are $75 for 3 days. Don

We did the Rosebud the prior 3 years after our Montana spot got hit with the plague. Nice guy for the outfitter; the Indian guide was 1/2 assed, even though we tipped him pretty well after the first year. The shooting started off on the poor side of fair and went downhill each year after that. Last year was the final straw - I shot a GRAND total of 164 rounds after driving nearly 1200 miles one way. I'll never shoot public / rez land again. It always seems to be heavily shot over. We did kill some time hunting rattlesnakes, which seemed to be abundant ( more so than the PD's ).

This year- back to Montana and it was WONDERFUL. Lots of shots - anything from 50 yards to over 1000 ( my son and a member of our party both hit dogs over 1000 yards ). Great outfitter and great guides. Shooting like the old days.

Did I say I'll never shoot public / rez land again?

What did you do with the rattlers?
Finest eating fried chicken you've ever tried!
Do hope the one's you killed didn't go to waste,
especially if they were very big.
