Default OT/327 Federal Magnum

Just curious, ask first right?

Just wondering if using small rifle primers in a 327 Federal Magnum case would be ok?

Hodgdon lists a Federal 200, Small Pistol Magnum, where as Hornady lists a Federal 205 which is a small rifle primer.

So I have some Remington 6 1/2 small rifle primers, can I use those or any small rifle primer for that matter? To my understanding if Hornady lists a small rifle primer in this pistol case then its safe to use any small rifle primer be it fed/rem/cci etc...

Thank you

Default Rifle primers in a handgun

It shouldn't be dangerous but they probably won't fire on the first try since the rifle primers have a "thicker" cup than pistol primers. You may wind up having to pull the bullets and start over if they don't go off.

Prime a few and try them in the gun before reloading.
Small pistol primers are in general 20% thinner than small rifle.

I have found that revolvers are less finicky and fire rifle primers just fine.

At least in some cases. I'd go one step further and just load a few rounds and try them in whatever gun I wanted to use them in. Note the "some cases" part and be safe.

I use mostly small rifle primers in my warmer 357 magnum loads with no issues.

Prime a few cases and pop the caps to see if they'll all fire.
That's all I use in revolver ammo since PVI didn't have any
SP's on hand that day I was there. I bought 20,000SR's and just
been using them up even for plinkers in .38's. Never had a problem
so far.

Thx guys.

I have Remington 6 1/2's srp I'll prime a few cases and try them. I'd rather get small rifle primers on account that I would use them more in my rifles as well.

The one thing all of us *should* have stated is start over on your load dev, drop at least 0.5g and work back up when using rifle primers, especially the 'hotter' ones.

Right, but to my understanding or as I read. A small "magnum" pistol primer is like a standard small rifle primer. Is this assumption correct?

And when developing loads I would start from the Hornady reloading manual which states using Federal #205 which is a small rifle primer.

I'm not one to take things for granted.
