conversion to 17 WSM
I have three 17 HMR's on 1215's. Seems a bit extreme to have that many of the same and one should be changed.
Does anyone know if a 17 WSM will clean out a 17HMR chamber without set back?

I know of a few 452's that have been converted to 17WSM. Adam

How did they shoot compared when they were .17HMR?

17 wsm
can not comment about 17 hmr in same gun as it was purchased just for this conversion and have just recently found ammo and since weather has not been favorable. i have other in 17 m2 and 17 hmr so can compare them later. i have had favorable results in rechambering both h&r and contender from 17 rimfire to 17 k hornet and 17 m4.

Adam I thought the 17WSM had a higher working pressure. What mods did they make to the 452 to handle it??? It seems Eric did this too.

That's who i was referring to Ray, but his was a 5mmRF. Other than the slight opening of the bolt face nothing. The 17Wsm is still at HMR pressures.

It was also my understanding that the 17WSM had a higher working pressure than the 17HMR and comparable to the 5mm rimfire magnum. See the following links.

I strongly suspect that the 17 WSM reamer will clean up the 17 HMR chamber. You know how internet opinions are though.............. I would counsel you to go looksee at:
http://www.saami.org/ After entering the SAAMI site; click into the new cartridges for the 17 WSM, and into the rimfire for the 17 HMR, ie the first two clickers on the page that comes up. The drawings might show what you want to know in detail. Reamers are inexpensive for the little rimfire 17's. I am pondering something similar, but on a No.1 chassis. I would like to think that all rimfire chambers should be fully supported due to the weakness of rimfire brass in general near the head. With the 17 WSM, I have no real working info on the brass used for it, ie how strong is the head etc. Guess one could section a case and peruse that, but I personally am thinking of a no.1 chassis with a fully supported chamber with a blade extractor. I have not read a lot on the 17 WSM really, but would guess that the WSM with about 500 more zip, might be at more pressure than the HMR. Looks like the brass would be toughened up, but I really do not know. If I remember right the 12/15 has a semi circle pivoting extractor at the bottom of the barrel face which gives some axial support to the case head. I would guess that one could cut the extractor at the same time as the new chamber. These 12/15 extractors do not grow on trees though. I have never executed a 17 WSM breeching system yet; so new ground for me. I think I would be leary of exposing a lot of brass near the head. I think I might peruse the net hearsay about twists in the 17 WSM rifles. It is a new cartridge of a sort, so might be good reading. Last edited by rick w.; 12-20-2014 at 06:23 PM. |

17WSM is at 33,000, same as the 5mm Remington Rimfire Mag.
