Careful, Bill........... Having experiences like that and posting about it here can get you downgraded from human being to primitive animal dressed in a wife beater shirt by some folks.

Just speaking from experience....

Could be I guess, but then again some are not in tune together at those companies and of course it could be their personal opinion that they give out. One way or the other, I pay no mind to many of them and just to some testing and checking for myself. Bill K

Your plan is probably the only way to really know, Bill........... And it will keep your life intact here, too.......

Lyktorct -- In my 527 Var I'm just a little further out than Bill K. @ 1.750 with a light hit with the Lee factory crimp die. I'm only single shot off a Calhoun slider so I have no idea if mine would run out of the regular magazine. Hope it's helpful. Seems like Bill K. always has good info.

Thanks Dave! I'm using Calhoun's mag follower also so COAL isn't an issue. I'm using Redding Dies and not sure what you mean by a crimp die. My Lee handgun dies have crimp dies; didn't know there was such an animal for rifles.

I'm starting to think it would be easier to move to Idaho. Thanks for the info

Depending on the Lot# or year it was made, Hornady 17 Hornet brass has a fairly wide variance in neck thickness and it would explain why some are able to push the bullet in and out of the necks even after they FL sized their brass. A FL die has a fixed neck diameter and can't compensate for varying neck thickness which is why I use a bushing type FL die. I just have to keep my brass segregated by neck thickness so I know which bushing to use.

Unfortunately, Hornady 17 Hornet brass is far from great stuff, but for now it's all we have. Even the Federal/American Eagle 17 Hornet ammo is just relabeled Hornady 17 Hornet ammo. BUT, I did talk to Federal a few months ago and was told they have intentions of actually making their own 17 Hornet ammo so there is hope we could soon have another option. Keep your fingers crossed it'll be better stuff.

Lee has (I believe they're called) "Factory Crimp Dies" for cartridge specific rifle calibers. I use them mostly on some of my 17 and 22 hornet loads. They are a "squeeze/collet" type. For some of my stuff it seems to add a touch more of consistency. Others may have different results.

Driving thru Idaho Thursday headed to Lakeside Montana. Son has just built his retirement (in 10 years) home. We're hoping to become at least "part timers" there. It's harder to relocate when you get "older", family, friends, etc.

Unfortunately there are a couple of over all length, OAL, variables which makes rifle to rifle comparisons a little iffy. In my opinion the most accurate method is to use an OAL tool, which can be obtained from Sinclair for about $30 plus shipping. Using this tool you can easily determine the maximum length, that is the point where the bullet is touching there lands, and go from there. I usually start at 0.005" from the lands and increase from there. Or, if you wish you can go the other way and jam the bullets into the lands. My rifles normally shot the best a little off the lands, but some will shot great with more distance. Its a matter of trial and error however the overall length gauge simplifies the process and can be used for any caliber or bullet combination.

I have a Cooper that shoot really good with an OAL of 1.748" which is about 0.005 of the lands.
