So many examples of service men and women, like this, it would be interesting to really know and read about all of them.
As for not talking much about what went on with these guys, my two uncles that went through WWII and came home, even though wounded a few times and going back into action, they really never talked much about it either. I believe many just kept in inside.

Neighbor John I mentioned about shooting his M/L off new years.
Was a bombadier and got shot down over Italy.
Took him three weeks to get back to his post.
Carried some shrapnel in his thigh to his grave.

Gr/gr/gr grandfather was in the Civil War. Went in young and
healthy. Came out mostly sick the rest of his life. Died at close to 90.

Whole lotta vets in my family.
