20 VARTARG vs 222
Getting a new cooper real soon, will use it for prairie dogs but will also be using it for some informal competition at 100 & 200 yds for score so i want the best for shooting paper the wind will always be blowing some. the ?? is will the 222 with say 52 gr bullets be affected less than the 20 vt with 32, 35, 39? any help will be appreciated
thanks kerry p.s. I already own a 20 vartarg but i know some of you have more than one gun of the same caliber so i could to |

.222
The 222 is hard to beat, the other day I was looking around on the internet and saw a site that made the claim that the 222 has a world record that has never been broken. I think the availability quality bullets is with the .222. Just my opinion. This weekend there is 788 in .222 coming up for sale I might have to look at that one?

I believe you can get better ballistics from a .204 over a .222.
Bullet availability shows that many of the .204 bullets have a higher BC and you can push them faster, thus making them less susceptible to drop, wind, etc. |

Considering the velocities one can get out of the 20VT compared to the .222, personally I'd opt for the 20VT. If you are shooting in a stiff cross wind, both are going to be affected some, but the difference sounds like good ol' hairgeschpilitten to me. JMO.

Ballistics favor 20 VT. Better wind performance, etc.
Good bullets available for the 20 VT. More (and probably better) match-grade bullets available for the 222. Commercial ammo available for the 222 in a pinch. For benchrest for score, the 222 makes a bigger hole and will score higher. That's why the 30BR is favored for serious competition. My first CF rifle is a 222, and it now has a Hart barrel. I shot the first "zero" I ever shot with it. But the 20 VT always goes with me when I'm out after woodchucks. Don't expect to make a rational decision. Go with your gut. Harold |

20 v 22
I agree with most said here, high BC 20 cal. bullets are hard to beat. sgtg

Kerry,
Split the difference and get the 221 Fireball with the 1/12 twist! The 221 Fireball has always been a standard for me. You need one, too! Couse a CZ in the fireball would be just fine...Saving the Cooper for something else. Let me know what you decide. Bill |

Kerry I know a lot of guys think ballistic program data is a waste of time, I'm not one of em. I think it makes great numbers comparisons for questions such as this.
Here is my actual load data output to 350 yards for my .20 VarTarg load and my .221 Fireball load. The .221 Fireball is loaded to higher pressures that the .222 and because of that is pretty much a ballistic twin of the .222 so IMO it's a good "rough numbers" comparison of the 2 rounds. I see the .20VT at it's best with 32 grain V-Max's and if I had a .222 I'd hope like heck it did as well with the 40 V-Max as all my other .22 cals do. Personal opinion only but on varmints with the smaller .22's I like 40's, "others mileage may vary ". Lastly, there is no bad choice here both are fantastic rounds. That said and again, personal opinion only "if I only got one it'd be the .20 VarTarg (Hey, I'm a small caliber guy ). Let us know what ya decide!! First my .20 VarTarg. Keep us posted . P.S. The rifles are sighted in at 5 yards different points but I don't see that making much difference as this is just a "rough comparison". Hope that helps. One last suggestion is you could always buy both .
