Default 'Smith question

What are the different methods of inscribing a barrel? Are the same tools used by jewelers and silversmiths?

May well be, but I know some gunsmiths use either stamping equipment and laser type engraving. Bill K

I mark where I want the information placed on the barrel and take it to a trophy shop for marking.

Default New Hermes Engraver

I started out using an Etch-O-Matic commercial grade kit but switched to a New Hermes Engraver. The New Hermes is faster and is more traditional. Both do a good job.

@barretcreek: The New Hermes engravers were a favorite jewelers Engraver in their heyday.

i was under the impression the Hermes was the standard of the industry. I have a few barrels that were done on a CNC.

Thank you. Woman who owns the framing and trophy shop is an old friend, so maybe she'll scribe whatever I need.

Take a piece of metal along with your idea
on paper and see how well she does it as a test.

Just say: I know you're good at engraving, I have
an idea and wonder what it would look like engraved
before I have it done to the gun."

We were told by the ATF agent the engraver needs to have an FFL. Even if we stand there and babysit the gun it is not legal without FFL.
