It depends on much the local postmaster wants to be bothered. Long guns are usually okay without a FFL copy as long as it is going to a manufacturer or a FFL. Also, I have found some UPS franchisees/mailing stations won't send a a firearm, and insist you take it to a bona fide UPS store.

Federal law says that an individual can ship a firearm to, and receive a firearm from, an FFL for repair OR replacement. Yes, you can ship your defective firearm back to the manufacturer or importer, and if they decide to replace it rather than repair it they can send the new gun directly to you without going through a dealer.

For the USPS if it is a handgun it has to be FFL to FFL. If it is a long gun, it just has to go to an FFL
Federal/BATFE laws/regs state that anyone can ship a firearm to an FFL and that FFL can ship back to the EXACT same address. Some State laws may not allow this.
