It depends on much the local postmaster wants to be bothered. Long guns are usually okay without a FFL copy as long as it is going to a manufacturer or a FFL. Also, I have found some UPS franchisees/mailing stations won't send a a firearm, and insist you take it to a bona fide UPS store.

Federal law says that an individual can ship a firearm to, and receive a firearm from, an FFL for repair OR replacement. Yes, you can ship your defective firearm back to the manufacturer or importer, and if they decide to replace it rather than repair it they can send the new gun directly to you without going through a dealer.

See:

Quote:
§478.147 Return of firearm.

A person not otherwise prohibited by Federal, State or local law may ship a firearm to a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer for any lawful purpose, and, notwithstanding any other provision of this part, the licensed manufacturer, licensed importer, or licensed dealer may return in interstate or foreign commerce to that person the firearm or a replacement firearm of the same kind and type. See §478.124(a) for requirements of a Form 4473 prior to return. A person not otherwise prohibited by Federal, State or local law may ship a firearm curio or relic to a licensed collector for any lawful purpose, and, notwithstanding any other provision of this part, the licensed collector may return in interstate or foreign commerce to that person the firearm curio or relic.

For the USPS if it is a handgun it has to be FFL to FFL. If it is a long gun, it just has to go to an FFL

Federal/BATFE laws/regs state that anyone can ship a firearm to an FFL and that FFL can ship back to the EXACT same address.

Some State laws may not allow this.
