nosler 20 grain 17 bullets
What kind of groups are these producing? Thought about trying these in a 17 hornet.

We get 1/2 to 3/4 inches out of HP and tipped from our CZs and TCs, same as Hornady. We buy what we can get or get a good deal on with regard to which brand.

Have you had anything that grouped better in those guns?

We haven’t. The key to getting the accuracy down in the CZs was trading our magazines for Calhoon modified ones. But, although my buddy has chased smaller groups with his CZ American, I haven’t. I like to hunt and as soon as I have what accuracy I need I tend to quit and load up hunting ammo. It’s become a real chore to get to the range and do the range work since I have had kids. I used to be pretty obsessive. On the Hornet based cartridges if I can get 3/4 inches that is plenty good for the shooting we do with them. Our TC barrels shoot about half inch day in and day out and the CZs 1/2 to 3/4 inches in 17 Hornet and the 22 Hornet CZ sub half inches.

them. Good pillar bedding job goes along way with the 527 action. No different than any other rifle. Put them close, touching the lands is were I get them to shoot the best. Last edited by L.Sherm; 07-02-2022 at 12:28 PM. |

Hi
Quote:
I have 3 x 17cal rifles -1 x martini 17 ackley hornet and 2 x 17 peewees (brno zkw265 and cz527 ). On average the varmageddon shoots better than the shots but only because the shots are prone to the odd flyer that blows the group out a bit. But I found that the Nosler shots kill foxes a bit cleaner. For overall accuracy I would take the varmageddons over vmaxs in all my 17s. My Martini and the brno 465 shoot @ 1inch or just under but my cz527 with a Pac-Nor barrel is not far off a half inch gun with the varmageddons. Just my observation in my own rifles hope it helps Cheers PS we wouldn't be having this conversation if Berger still made their 17cal 20gr. They sure were good bullets. |

I shoot the 20 gr. Nosler Tipped Varmageddon bullets in my KoO M84 17 MKIV and get about 1/2 MOA accuracy and my 17 AH does about the same. Accuracy in both rifles is about the same with the 20 gr. VMax bullets, but its nice to have options.

Thank you for the information. I was not looking at the tipped bullets.

When I shot a lot of the Nosler "Shots" in my 17's, I had some very decent groups that worked great. But now I can legally only shoot lead free, so my 17's get the 15.5 NTX's and they also group well and do a fine job on critters.
Grouping is consistent in the 1/2 inch area. JD, question ? I see you have mentioned changing to the Calhoon mod magazine has given your rifles better accuracy. I have and shoot both the factory and modified magazines in both by 17 and 20 caliber CZ'z rifles and have found they both work fine, as all they do is feed the cartridge into the chamber. Bedding and such has been my key to improving the accuracy. How does the magazine change make the difference in your rifles ? |
