Suspect still better forming 221 brass.

Have not bought any Nosler 17FB brass, so can not say.
I have bought and formed down 221 FB Nosler, and it is just fine.
However I do form most of my 17 FB from LC brass and it also works just fine and is less costly to locate and use.

I use VV133 and the Nosler has 2 to 3 grains less capacity than the Remington brand. It's probably OK if you're using ball powder or some sort of short cut. Regular long cut powders may reduce velocity. I bought a hundred a few years ago and after seeing the reduction in capacity, sold them.

As above, they have a bit less capacity than Remington brass. It’s also a lot better quality though. If you have existing loads worked up, you will need to back them off a bit and work back up; but you should do that anytime you change components.

I don't have Nosler in 17 FB, but in all the other cartridges I use it in it is excellent brass. Norma makes most of Nosler's brass, just like they make all the Weatherby brass. Whether you buy faculty loaded or off the shelf brass and over many years, the cases still all weigh the same. Very even and consistent. I would rank it with Lapua. Some call it on the soft side, I have used it in some pretty hot loads, never had a problem with their brass as long as I wasn't running over pressure.

I believe now days, Nosler is making all their own brass and have not used or obtained any from Norma, as in the past.
Maybe Rick can varify this, as he has direct contact with Nosler in Bend.

As for over/pushing pressure, no brass will hold up when loaded over the pressure for a given cartridge. Something will give, be it the brass or the firearm in time. Play and reload safe and sane.

That's correct Bill.

Nosler purchased the entire Silver State Armory in WA some time back, including the brass production machines. Although at one time a few years ago, some of their headstamped brass was produced by Norma, some by Federal. But now they produce virtually all of their own brass in Redmond, OR, and from my personal experience, it lasts and has almost the same consistency as Lapua. My only peeve is their crew trims all of it .010" under SAAMI spec "trim-to" length. Otherwise, it's very good quality in all regards. I've used a large amount of their 221FB brass in my 20VT and both my 221FB's with not a single issue, and it's all going strong....about 1,400 pieces of it at last count.

Rick

Thanks for the update on Nosler brass. I knew they were making their own 6.5 brass, did not realise they were now making all their own stuff.

I too bought a few bags a few years ago. Nosler sold them as seconds.
The necks were thick.
I suspect the entire case was. That explains the lose of capacity.

I turned some. They were no better than the ones I formed from Mil 223 (5.56) LC brass.

Jim, did you turn to uniform, or do you have a tight neck chamber? Just asking because I bought a couple hundred of them.
