Typo, I meant 20 grain. I also use benchmark in the 25 grain. 8208 I find too slow for the lighter bullets. Good accuracy but no near the same velocity, All 3 of my FBs shoot their best groups at the very top loads.
JWHIP - I don't recall how far off the lands but the 30 grains are a a COAL of 1.860, at 1.750 the groups almost double. |

I got into the 17 game earlier this year. I have a 17/23 SMC. Basically an improved version of the 17 FB. I have pushed loads up to 4200+ FPS with mediocre accuracy. I found a sweet spot with Benchmark and the 20 grain Varmegeddon running right at 3850 FPS. The accuracy was so good I left it alone. A groundhog doesn't know the difference between the 3850 or 4200 FPS. I have since built a 17 Squirrel. Depending upon what your plans are with the 17 FB you may want to look into a Squirrel or a Mink. Use lots less powder. I'm still testing the Squirrel and I'm getting 3250 FPS out of it with crazy accuracy. 7.5 grains of 296. It's very efficient. You can load a lot of rounds with a pound of powder. And it's extremely fun making brass. BTW, I now have a barrel on order chambered in 20 MINK.

Thanks. the target squares are 1/2" on a side so even a group well under a half inch a two hundred yards doesn't look that great, the little 17 calibre bullets leave a lot of room between unless you manage to put them all in the same hole.

Accuracy always trumps velocity.
No matter what cartridge you are using, large or small, if maximum velocity is the primary concern, the shooter will likely spend a lot of time missing what he's shooting at versus using a load that is slower but far more accurate. -BCB

I have a 17 fireball built on a CZ action. 9 twist. I shoot 25 grain v max, and it prefers Benchmark as well.

17MIV loads
I found that H335 worked well, but I kept my velocity at 3750. Benchmark is about the same for burning rate. I was never able to get better than 1/2" groups with 3 or 4 touching and 1 out of the group. My reloading techniques have improved and I might get slightly better results at this time. If I used Lapua brass rather than Remington, I would go to a higher velocity.
From reading loading posts, it seems that necking down cartridges to smaller calibers results in going to slower powders and less volume compared to the parent case. I found this to be true when loading for my 20P. Chuck |

I have an XP-100 17" 9T Shilen-barrelled setup that shoots the 25 V-Max into about an inch or so at 225 yds. I think I'm netting 3400 mv out of it. At work now have to check later. Was my favorite go-to coyote handgun until I got a 20 BR XP built.
