Price Check: Remington Model 581-S
Any idea what one is worth in very good to excellent condition?
Metal is excellent with a nice deep blue overall. Probably 98%+ overall. The bore looks very bright and smooth. Both Front and rear sights intact. The stock has likely been walnut stained and refinished, but it is in great condition with good color contrasts. No dings in the wood. Quality of refinish is very good. It comes with one 10-round magazine. Scoped with a new looking Bushnell Banner 4x12 adjustable objective scope adjustable for parallax from infinity down to 15 yards. The objective bell has a sticker reading "Bushnell Dusk & Dawn Optics". The words "Exceptional Low Light Performance" in small lettering on the sticker. Scope is in excellent overall appearance and condition. All in all a very nice looking rifle and scope combination. I'm guessing that the scope is much much newer than the rifle that dates from 1967 to 1983. TIA - BCB

Nope......... I never go there.
I know some folks here have worked with the 581 action so I thought someone might have some information. -BCB

Hard to find comparables online, likely no more than $500, no where near a 541s.

Thanks for the response. ~$500 was the price range that I was thinking also but I wasn't sure. I'm not usually dipping into the used rim fire market that often, but this one caught my eye. And the shelf price is excellent. -BCB

The earlier walnut stocked rifles IMO are nicer that the later hardwood stocks the only ISSUE is that they do not have the bolt that keeps the front half from rotating and can B A Bi%$%th to get bac in the action after cleaning.
They are VERY accurate and 1/2-3/8" groups @ 50 yds are the norm. If it is as nice as U say $300.00-350.00 would not B 2 much I own 5 of these along with 3 541's . Good Luck Jim |

I once knew of a 581 repeater and at the same time, I had a .580 single shot.
BOTH of those rifles absolutely loved Winchester T22 ammo, printing mostly sub 1", 5 shot groups at 100meters off the bags. Oft times, with good wind (zero), we'd get 1/2" to 6/10" groups & sometimes much smaller. They were both incredible shooters. This is not to say yours is, Bayou City Boy, but it just might be. Given this level of accuracy, it could well be a winning silhouette rifle, if re-stocked.

BCB, be careful to not dry fire the rifle, as the older ones don't have an inertial firing pins (no firing pin springs), and they will peen the breech face/chamber if dry fired a lot. My older, much abused 541S had been peened, and I had to iron out the peening, but it still shoots great. The newer one has the visible firing pin springs, and it is fine. Both like about any SV ammo, and really like CCI Mini-Mags for HV ammo. Enjoy.
