Work along the same areas that Hodgdon's Load data site shows for the 25 grain V-Max in various 17 calibers. Bill K

Have used VV 133 in four 17 FB barrels. With 25 Nagels and Kindlers, 17.0 plus or minus three tenths of a grain has worked for me. Standard disclaimer, start out a full grain or more lower. In my experience, barrel bore size varies enough to require lower or higher loads.

I’m using H4198 which the Berger manual shows a starting load of 13.5 grs. and a max of 15.2 grs. The load I’m using is a little hotter but Berger seems to be a little on the conservative side. H4198 and a Fed 205M primer produces good velocities and low SDs.

You might give CFE BLK a try, it is working very well in my 17 FB. Bill K

Just wish Berger would pull there head out and do a limited run of the old 25 grain Hollowpoint Match bullets, like they’ve done with the .20 Cal 55 grain bullets. I’m sure they would sell out very quickly. And you would have some very happy Fur hunters.....

N133 is the powder my Fireball liked with 25gr Bergers. I don't remember what the actual load was but it was super accurate.

I have had excellent results with Benchmark for 20 and 25 grain and 8208 for 30 grain. The 8208 is very accurate in 20 and 25 but too slow to provide top velocity and since Benchmark is just as accurate there is no advantage to the 8208 in lighter bullets. Great accuracy and top velocities.
This is 8208 with 30 grain Bergers. The 25 and 20s with Benchmark shoot just as good. Factory Rem barrel. Last edited by Dean2; 01-23-2020 at 06:59 AM. |
