.17 Hornet
I bought a savage .17 hornet and I am shooting factory hornady 25gr hp ammo. I get a lot of primer flow and every one in a while it will pierce a primer. Has anyone else seen this with the 25 gr ammo.

Sounds like a headspacing problem coupled with either soft primers or an extra long firing pin. Or it could be your throat is way to short.

Maybe too much clearance between the fireing pin and it's hole in the bolt face or breech block?

Sounds right to me.

The headspacing and throat are fine I measured them but I believe the part about the firing pin is my problem. One thing I did notice is that a fired case neck only measures .001 larger than a loaded case neck. Would that cause a problem like this.

YES, a too tight chamber at the neck could increase pressures and cause what you are seeing with the primers.
You might want to try taking a little off of the neck on a few rounds and see if it helps. |

I bought 2 boxes of the 25 grain hp factory ammo and had a bunch of leaking primers. My Ruger is set at .063 hs if memory serves me. This stiff is loaded much hotter than 20 grain Vmax ammo. I bought it because I thought it was cheap shooting but several cases will have primer pockets too loose to reload. I am reloading them next week so I will update then.

For what it's worth, my most recent CZ 527 17 Hornet only has 1.5-2.0 thou of difference between a factory loaded round, with 20gr Vmax, compared to my fired cases.

I had the same problem with Hornady factory 25 grain out of my CZ 527 varmint in .17 hornet, and also had some split cases so now I won't shoot it. The accuracy was poor also.
Never had a problem with the .20 grain factory Vmax loads and accuracy is outstanding. |

Looks like I might just have to shoot the 20’s but what am I going to do with the 600 rounds of 25’s I have. Damn I knew I shouldn’t have bought so many. Anyone want to trade for 20 gr vmax.
