Since I install my muzzle brakes permanently, when the ports start showing signs of carbon build up, I will take a short reamer of the exact port size, put it in a small T handle, and insert it in each of the ports, and with just a couple of twists, the carbon is gone...
Since my muzzle brakes are ported 360 degrees, the reamer enters one port and exits the opposite port 180 degrees around, so you can actually clean 2 ports at a time!
I never use chemicals to clean the ports, and depending on cartridge, the ports might need cleaned every 300 rounds, 600 rounds or 1,000 rounds. When the brake gets "dirty", it gets cleaned.
