17 Hornet reloading powder recommendations
Just joined and I'm looking for powder recommendations for use in reloading for 17 Hornet. I am picking up a new CZ 527 Varmint in 17 Hornet and will be using once fired brass from factory Hornady ammo and have brass/bullets/primers at the ready. Some powder suggestions I've seen from other sources have been A1680, AA2200, N120, and V120. Would love to hear from experienced guys that have reloaded several hundred or more in this caliber.
I had the same gun in 17 Hornet in the past and used LilGun but after seeing some concerns/issues with using that powder in this caliber from other guys in other groups I'm looking for a new powder to try. I'll be loading Hornady 20gr V-Max and 25gr HP's. Also looking to pick up a set of Redding dies if anyone has a lead on the best price for them out there. Thanks much in advance. 1680, 4227 & 4198. Make sure you do a full resize on the factory rounds the first time. I found my 527A prefers a cleaner bore. After about 20 rounds the groups open up. A couple of tight fitting patches restores accuracy.

I use only AA2200 in mine now for 20 and 25 Vmax. Western Powders load data(Hornady data is on the hot side). MOA of .5 to .75" easily achieved in my CZ527 Varmint.

I have two CZ 527 Varmint 17 Hornets. Started out with a basic set of Hornady dies because they were immediately available and used them until I got my Redding type S FL bushing die and one of their competition seating dies, have used the Redding dies ever since. I'd have to look to see which bushing I use but I only run 1 thou of neck tension and I minimally size the brass, keeping the brass specific to each gun.
My load for both rifles is 20gr Vmax and 12.2gr 1680. I've tried as high as 12.4gr of 1680 but 12.2 shoots the best. I have a friend that used H110 in his CZ and it produced outstanding accuracy results but the velocity was a bit slower. The new Hodgdon Powder CFE BLK is supposed to be another top performer, but I haven't messed with it much yet. There's plenty of powders that work well in these 17 Hornets, it's just that some have characteristics that are sometimes a little less pleasant to deal with than others. |

Ive got two Cz in .17 hornet, A varmint and an American.
I've used little gun, 4227, H4198, ADI2207, H110,N120, blackout. N120 gave the best accuracy, Little gun too erratic, H4198, doesn't flow in a .17cal neck as good as a fine ball powder, H110, IMR4227, quite slow. CFE black out gave the best speeds, with slightly less accuracy, this now my go to powder, as its cheaper than VV N120, and more readily aviable in my area. Blackout 12gr 3470fps, Hornardy/ or Ppu brass WSR primer. 20gr v-max 12.3 = 3566fps 12.6 = 3785 12.8 = 3779 25gr Hornardy HP gave 3187 with 11.2gr Blackout. CZ varmint with 20" barrel, 5 shots each group mangospeed. Ive settled on 12.5gr, with 20gr v-Max, CFE Blackout and AA1680, seam to both be outstanding powders in the .17 hornet. |

Do not know if you can get them but I run AR2205. This is a fast powder and 10.1gn with a 20gn is very accurate. AR2207 also works well but velocity is down.
I like to run 17gn projectiles at 10.5, 2205 and am tinkering with a 15gn. Bill |
