Maybe they'll send one to Eric Mayer to test and he can tell us about it, although, it doesn't sound like Zermatt Arms is going to have the 17 WSM version available any time soon so we'll probably still be talking and wishing for it a year from now. As I mentioned earlier, I'd actually prefer something like this in 17 Hornet over the 17 WSM and if they made one of those, I probably wouldn't even wait for a review. An email from Zermatt said 17 WSM by mid summer. Time will tell....

Please educate me --- Why/What is preference of 17 WSM, and not just go with a 17 Fireball or 17 Hornet?

I think a lot like the 17 WSM, for two reasons. They want a rimfire and it is the fastest of the present rimfire cartridges, on the market, for a 17 cal. It fits in with some that don't want to reload all of their rounds, and enjoy rim fires.

I wondered if I would like the .17WSM, so I waited until I found a laminate fluted Bmag cheap/ new and bought it. I friking hate the bolt, BUT I actually like the gun. When the wind was not blowing I will say I was shocked how far out it knocked them down. It's really nice not having to worry if you drop a few pieces of brass, and basically lighting dollar bills on fire when you search and don't find them. I am hoping to shoot sage rats in the next couple of years and a rimfire would be a big plus with the volume shooting. I have a .17HH, 77/22/17 and will not part ways, and it also travels with me so their is a place for both. IF I was starting out shooting Pdogs, and only could buy two guns, the .17 WSM would be one of them. Something to be said for just buying your loaded ammo for not alot of $.

The biggest downside to the 17 WSM, even more so than the lack of good quality guns chambered for it, is because this is a very capable little cartridge, for a rimfire, it has the ability to reach out there, with authority, but unfortunately the ammo is just kind of mediocre. I don't really think it's a whole lot worse than the HMR ammo but like I said, the little 17 WSM is capable of more so we as shooters are always pushing the limits of this cartridge, but the ammo quality is what holds us back from, consistently, being able to push those limits further. When you compare the ballistics of the 17 WSM to any and all other rimfire cartridges, it doesn't take long to see its worth. As I said above, I'd be THRILLED with a high end custom 17 Hornet as well. |

I am less than 15 minutes away from their building, and I have a HS precision short action stock setting on the shelf, and have a mid July vacation, planning on going to Wyoming/ Montana, so...., I may be driving over there in a few weeks and asking them a few questions.

Also, and since there are so many ground squirrel/sage rat shooters on this forum, when you sit down in the edge of a pivot to shoot sage rats, you'll have shots anywhere from up close to out there 3-400yds. If I shoot close ones with my 17 WSM I don't feel silly, like I would if I was using a small centerfire, and it's nice to be able to use the same gun for those up close ones as well as the ones out the 300+ yards.
