Default Insect Caliber Rifles

A good friend stopped by to shoot yesterday. We had both decided on two calibers, 22 Hornet and 218 Bee. He brought a Cooper model 38 in 22 Hornet and a Kimber of Oregon 218 Bee. I took my Ruger 1A 22 Hornet and Ruger 1S 218 Bee. We were fortunate to have light winds and bright blue skies. I had never seen a Cooper if any stripe before, very nice, almost made my heart flutter. I was amazed at the accuracy of the Cooper. We aren't overly serious about our shooting, just have fun, make some holes in the target and shatter a few clay birds.

Default Reminded me...

When we were kids we would go up on the barn roof at my friends house and shoot wood bees with the Sheridan’s in 5mm.
I have always liked the Hornet and Bee names for the cartridges,as a kid I remember seeing a Hornet case for the first time and wondering why they gave the more vicious name to the smaller case.
Glad you two had fun,now you need a Cooper or threeI wish I bought more model 38s,glad I have a nice one in 17HeBee

Neither of those old cartridges get th respect they are due from the general public. Both a capable of great accuracy and they are strong performers on game as well. The 22H is still used extensively up here by trappers as it is far better on swimming Beaver than the 22 Mag. They also make great gopher rounds.

I put over 7,000 rounds from each, a.22 Hornet and a .218Bee on gophers.
They work very well indeed. both were modern rifles and were using much more sophisticated ammunition than factory level stuff.
The CZ Hornet worked to 345yards and next year at 454yards, but usually was the range was just short of 300yards, same with the #1 in .218Bee.
They are great big gopher rifles. Big Gopher ie: Columbia Ground Squirrels about 1/2 to 2/3rds the size of Black Tailed Prairie Dogs.

The Kimber is a great shooter, he found it new in box. He loads Lil Gun powder, Rem. 6 1/2 primers and 40Gr. V-Max bullets. I had shot the Kimber before, but never seen or fondled a Cooper. It is always exciting for a rifle geek to shoot a new one. There is no room at the inn or I would be on the hunt for another Bee, I have a bunch of 22 Hornets.

I have four 22 Hornets, one of which is a Kimber of Oregon M82. It does shoots quite well, between 0.3 and 0.4" for five shots at 100yds. Maybe even slightly better than the Cooper M38 and the CZ527.
