Default Anyone got any Sayko's

Probably the best explanation of the name Sako and how to pronounce it. Pasted this off a site I frequent for Sako owners.

It depends on the language you are speaking. "SAKO" is an acronym -- the first letters of the Finnish words for what translates roughly as "civilian guard arms factory" or some such (there are several entire posts on the actual name).

Acronyms are pronouced according to the rules of pronuciation of the language in which they are used. If you are speaking Spanish (refrain from doing that in Arizona if you want to avoid an overnight in the county lock-up while someone searches for "your papers"), the "a" is always a soft sound like "ah", thus it is "Sahko" or "Socko". This soft "a" is common to many more languages than the English pronuciation, which would be "Say-ko" with a long "a".

So, since SAKO is a collection of initials rather than an actual word, its pronunciation is pretty much up to the interpretation of whomever is pronouncing it. I say "Say-ko", but then I'm an anglophone (nothing to do with sexual preference or the recent British elections), so that comes naturally to me. I more often hear non-British Europeans say "Sah-ko".

Fortunately, I have almost never heard the rather grating pronunciation that your great aunt might use: "Sack-o".

I only own one, a custom L461 Vixen in 6TCU. Not really concerned too much about the tomato/tomahto issue with these fine little rifles. I am just happy to own one.

Chuck, Interesting post. In Australia its Sayko, when I moved to N.Z. I found they say Sahko

No doubt this, among other quaintly kiwi euphanisms will be corrected once N.Z. is absorbed into main stream Australia. Posibly with State status depending on the number of Allblacks traded

When in Rome.....

I guess if I'm in Finland and want to be accepted, I'll talk about my "sock-o". If I'm in the good old USA, I'll say what rolls of my lips easiest: Say-ko.

I found these two links earlier when the issue first came up but didn't post them.

The first link is from the same source Chuck quoted; the Sako Collectors Forum. Some interesting information and history, if all true.

http://sakocollectors.lefora.com/200...efore-the-war/

The second link is from Wikipedia, which much like any forum, including the Sako forum, is filled with opinions; some probably good and some probably not so good, and nothing more... This link however does have some pretty significant Sako production history attached for those who might be interested.

Them Europeans can pronounce it however they want. This is America, I'm an American, and I speak American. I have 6 of those rifles and they're all Say-ko.

Yes, I do have a say-ko and it keeps great time! I hope to have a Sock-o one day, because I hear they shoot great!

I am confused, I am American and speak english, but if the illegal immigrants down the street become americans, they will speak american, because they sure don't speak english!
