Default Spotting scopes

I'm looking for a good spotting scope, its for range work and I need to see small bullet holes at 300 yds. Some one recommended an Alpen so I purchased one I'm lucky if I can see holes at 200 yds. There are a lot of names out there that I'm not familiar with so any recommendations would be helpful. thanks Bob

The target has a lot to do with it. I like having a white target with just a spot to shoot at. WAY easier to see holes. I love my 12-40x leupold. It may not have the best glass but its got the most eye relief of any scope I've used or looked at the specs for. Sounds silly, but if you have to touch the scope you will induce wiggles and then its worthless.

For years I've used one of the earlier Leupold 25X 50mm armored spotters for range work, and I can easily see bullet holes (.22 cal) at 200 yards. Younger eyes could probably see them at 300.

These spotters can be found used now for a decent price, and as has been said, the glass although decent, just not Swaro quality.

Shown with my CZ 527 American in 221FB:

Default Swaro

I see the used Swaro's on Ebay all the time. I wonder if they have a warranty like Leupold? I purchased a used Leupold target scope and the focus didn't seem correct, I sent if into Leupold to have it looked at and within 10 I had a brand new Leupold target scope.

Look at a Kowa. They are top rated by all the bird people - even above swarovski and leica. Being able to see small holes at 300 yards boils down to large objective and magnification. The Kowa needs an eye piece that is sold separately. A fixed power works the best. Kowa has bodies that sell at different price points. You may consider a remote set up if you really want to see your hits at 300 yards. Burt

PS - here is a good price on a 66mm kowa - http://www.sale-telescopes.com/produ...Angled%29.html

Don't do like I did, buy cheap ones that say 40X but its all washed out. I bought 3 or 4 of them before I said the heck with and got a good one. About had to give away the old ones. Be ready to spend some big bucks but they are worth it.

My wife bought a 20-60 Vortex Diamond straight scope, she watched birds and I use it for looking at .20 and .17 caliber holes. I seldom shoot more the 200 yard right now but will change this coming year. It is a great scope. We bought it on sale and it has been the very best scope we have ever owned.

Another thought I have two 10-50 Sightron rifle scopes that I can see small bullet holes at 300 yds so I guess that is anther option?
