New 22 Hornet
So I'm looking for a 22 hornet.. The CZ is out of my price range..
Technically the ruger 77/22 target is as well but I might be able to swing it @ $700 new. The other option is the Savage model 40 but of course the dealer with it @ $460 doesn't have any.. but I found it for $570. So does one shoot better than the other?? I'm planning to try the 36gr Varmint Grenade for beavers.. My longest shots will be 100 yards probably. Any other things I should look @??? Thanks guys Blygy |

22 hornet
keep checking around, the cz 527 shoots the best, and the ruger is the worst for accuracy. I just bought a brand in the box cz 527 in 22 hornet for $479 + tax a total of $519 drive out!
have a great day |

Unfortunately I live in Canada. Our retailers here whine about people buying things from the states while gouging us. If I could get a rifle into Canada with minimal hassle I would.
But on the the point @ hand.. the rugers are really poor for accuracy? How bad?? 1 inch group @ 100 yes or no?? If I can keep a bullet within 1" @ 100 with factory fodder I'd be happy. Thanks Blygy |

Savage should shoot just fine, they are usually very good out of the box, but it may be a little heavy. I would say a Beaver may be a little large for a Varmint Gernade, plus, I have never seen anyone who could get them to shoot. Larry

Stay away from the Ruger they shoot like dogs and the Savages have a coned chamber which sucks! The CZ is the way to go they shoot the best by far. just my 10 cents

Blygy,
welcome aboard... buy yourself an Anschutz and you won't have to worry about accuracy ! cb <*)))>{

Can you explain the "coned chamber"?? I've never heard this term.

A lot of the Ruger comments are about older Rugers. The newer ones are very different. I reload for a buddy and his Ruger will "flick a fly off a billy goat at 100 yds". He's continually pounding PD's at 200+ yds. without problems. Two years ago he and I were shooting jacks at 200-250 yds. and my Cooper 17AH had to stay working.

IMHO, the Ruger 77 in 22 Hornet is "iffy". Some shoot like barn burners out of the box, many don't. I have used the 77 Hornet take-off barrels on other projects and they generally shoot great. The problem with the 77 Hornet is that it uses the same two piece bolt as the 77 rim fire rifles and I think this where the problems are. There are ways to shim the bolt that helps, but all in all I agree "go with the CZ".

Other problem with the Ruger is they are throated DEEP. As far as the cone chamber in the savage to explain it in simple terms picture the chamber and instead of being "open" like any other chamber this one comes out into the shape of a cone. After a while the ejector claws will dent it in on both sides. Nothing but problems. I had two and sold them they did not impress me one bit.
Go with the CZ hands down for the money. I have one and it shoots the V-max like new money and if it does not shoot rechamber to a K Hornet. |
