Default Bullet in diagram is NOT what I’m talking about

Again, the bullet I’m talking about is COPPER PLATED Reeds 32gr Soft point.

Left to right: Reeds 32gr RBBT, Hornady 25gr HP, Hornady 20gr V-Max, Midway 20gr Dogtown HP (Nosler).

Acornin243: I shoot a CZ 527 Varminter in 17 Rem. I have had it for several years. And the best loads I can come up with is H4895 powder and the 20 & 25 gr V-max`s and 25 gr HP bullets from Hornady. My rifle will group all three of these bullets, in less than a 1/2 inch at a 100 yds and most of the time 1/4 inch. My CZ 527 Varminter in 17 Rem is one of my most favorite Varminter Rifles. And I shoot it alot and I like it more every time, I shoot it.

Smile Reeds

I spoke with Ron Reed this afternoon, ordered up some more bullets, we'll see what happens, he said those 32gr SPRBBT came about as a bit of luck after using a shorter jacket than the 32gr HPRBBT. I didn't order any of either as I have plenty Kindler Golds in 30gr. I did get some 32gr cast and some of the 25gr. Hopefully the order arrives soon.

Acronin243, understood.
I looked at that NOE 17 mold when it first came out, right after I got my 17HH.
The guys keep putting that pic up was like dangling a carrot in front of the mule to get him to go,lol. It wouldn't take much to get me to order one. As I mention I just shudder thinking of getting a lead fouled bore on a 17. To soft,to hard a bit to much speed, a small burr or a lump of carbon to tear a piece of lead off spooks me. And some say you can shoot it out. Well I tried that ONE time, worst and hardest fouling job I ever had to clean up.
I don't think PC (powder coating) to be a complete answer either.

You said the Reeds bullet you refered to were plated, you do mean jacketed I think?

Sorry for the small detail of the thread.
Jeff

I talked to Ron today these are jacketed 32 grain soft points.

He is going to cast me some 32gr RN, in almost pure lead. They should be just fine I'll keep shooting them until I see leading. Remember 22 cal rimfire, many of those are lead bullets with no copper cladding. You don't see anybody complaining about their 22 getting too leaded up.

After having cast bullets for about 25 years now, size is king. Alloy, lube and speed failures in no particular order. The right size and you can get by with a lot.
Speed reflects on size and how tough alloy is. I didn't say hard or soft, there is a line there I prefer to refer to as tough.
The alloy I use in my 22 hornet is way different than for 6.5,30's etc.
I got stuck on hard alloy for a long time, because that is what I was always told.
I got hung up on mediocre loads as far as speed, because that is what I was told.
My shooting bud an I have since proven a lot of things to be totally false. Cast can be driven to jacketed speeds of MOST calibers.
Keeping the cast bullet from skidding on contact with the rifling is the trick. It needs to grab and hold onto the lands and grooves, thus my reference to a tough alloy.
Look forward to hearing results on the CB's. May the gremlins steer clear of your project.
Jeff

Jeff, I would strongly echo your comments.

Indeed alloy and sizing are critical, not so much the size of the bullet, but how it fits the throat.

Our normal alloy is quite tough, having a high silver content, it keeps it hard but still malleable. For 17TBS's use, he'll be running them around 1100 +/- which a 1:50 or 1:35 alloy will be perfect.

Ron, 1100 sounds like fun for sure. I swore I would never cast for anything smaller than a 30 caliber. Forward a few years and it was a 7mm, then a 6.5. 22RF ammo in the past I said the heck with it and sold off most all my WW collection and moved to the small center fires, a 22 Hornet at the top of the list. I wanted somthing that fell into the area of 1030-1060, found it and has been a lot of fun.
As mentioned I look forward to reports from folks with the CB's in the 17's.

I often wished I had picked up on the CCM rifles years back. Was a fellow from Springfield Mo area in the mid to late 80's that would show up at local GS and torment me with them.

Yes sir indeed. I run the same alloy in my .22 Hornet at 1100-1150 with the 45g WFN and it sure makes for cheap .22 LR shooting!
