this thread...
makes me worry...I have a 1:9 twist coming, may even have it by next week. I am hoping to be able to shoot 55's at 900 ft ele. I do hope it works. I may have to go to 50's? The powders I have are 8208, benchmark, varget, H322, RL10, BLC2. Maybe a couple more. I need to get a stock first though.

50 & 55's
Larry, I'm sure the 1:9 will work with 50 and 55's
The 1:9 twist has been proven to be ideal numerous times... My twist is definitely 1:9 as well I've remeasured and readjusted my bullet seating and anticipate improved accuracy. Will keep everyone posted. Thanks AL |

I am very confident that the 9 twist will work it seems though that it will take a little playing with. I will keep everyone posted and hope more people chime in.

Several poeple shoot the 40gr in the 1-9" out of the PPC's so it's gonna be fine.

20BR w/40 gr. bullet is a LAZER
20BR with 40 grain bullets @ 3950-4150 fps
Flat shooting bullet with plenty of energy on coyotes and fur friendly at same time. It was perfect in my 20BR with 1:11 barrel. I've never tried it in my 20BR-IMP with 1:9 barrel but many other fellows have had success with same barrel twist. |

I finally got the Savage with the Douglas 9 twist to repeat good groups with 30.2gr of RE15 and the 55gr Berger. The Cooper with the 8.5 twist Pacnor is still giving fits.

My 20x47 L has a 1-9" barrel and i have been useing 40 gr. V-max's for barrel break in and fireforming. The 40's are leaveing the barrel at 3750 for a fireform load.. I tried a few 50 gr. Bergers and they looked very promiseing compared to the 40 gr. bullets.. For powder I'm useing Ram shot big game to fire-form and will also test it for hunting loads as well as N-540, N-550, RL-15 and Varget...

Its nice to hear and see other results with the big twenties. I am not interested in the lighter bullets as my 204 already shoots 39sbks consistently under .3 but I am sure others will be. Thanks.

Are these big 20's fussy to load, I'd say, yes.
I'm still looking for a good load for the 20BR -IMP using the Berger 50's in my 1:9 PacNor
My expectations are .250"-.300" groups @ 200 yds. The most recent trip to the range was to test bullet seating and found that 5 thou from the rifling gave best groups. That was a .750" group @ 200 yards The groups opened-up as the bullet was seated longer. These loads were 34.4 grains of H414 @ avg. 3815 fps Anything faster and primer pockets stretch too much limiting my brass life. My next trip to the range will include this same OAL seating with H414, IMR8208, and RL15 which are 85% of case capacity. |

I am using 29.5gr N150 as a working load with BR4s under the Berger 50 in a 1 in 9. works well at about 3500. Thats plenty fast enough, no fox out runs it for sure!. As for flat shooting, run the speeds through Big Game info, not to much difference to 300 yards. Loading at these pressures makes shot spotting fairly easy and gives good case life.
I found 40 Vmaxs poor accuracy wise at above about 3700 in the 1 in 9 Bartlein using H322. N150 seems a far better powder for the cartridge, N160 may be even better still as you get more of a case full. A |
