222 or 223
I'd give my vote to the triple deuce. With it's longer neck, it will do a better job of handing the heavier bullets. I have a 222 with a 10 twist, and I get real close to 223 velocity with 69g bullets. You can push the velocity in the 222. Also because of the longer neck, it's my opinion that the turbulence point is more in the case than in the throat as with the 223. That means longer throat life. Keep throat length, in mind when building either.

witch one???????
I'd like to have a 222 but, the extra velocity of a 223 would be nice and its making it a hard decision. The reason I want the 222 is for less powder use, less recoil, better accuracy, and a little longer barrel life I suppose. The nastalgia is part of it too.
What do you think? None does all. I equate it to a 6 BR vrs. 6 PPC The PPC in bench rest will out perform the BR but the BR makes a better long range gun. That being said, look at the reality of what you want it to do. You said the reason I want,,,, sounds like a 222 to me. sgtg out |

I went another route. I had rifles in 223 and then went to 221FB, and skipped over the Deuce completely, since I don't shoot benchrest competition. So, now I have both walking varmint rifle and bench rifles for 221FB and 223.

I have owned both and in the field I could find no real difference.

I have both 222 (Sako Vixen) and 223 (Rem 700 VS) and both are tack drivers. I'd go with the 223, given the ready availability of brass (cheap and premium).
Just make sure you chamber the throat to suit your bullets. If you like short bullets you may have trouble getting them seated near the lands if the throat is "standard". For example, my R700 can't take 40-gr V-max or Ballistic Tips (both boattails) at the lands without the bullets barely into the neck, like only .010" or less engagement (not counting the boattail). The 223 has a very short neck. OTOH if you chamber it for light bullets, and then try to shoot heavy/long bullets, you will be seating them below the neck junction. Just think about it and chamber accordingly, maybe a little shorter throat than standard. Last edited by brians356; 10-26-2015 at 08:14 PM. |

I was going to say the same. With a 9 twist it is just about perfect.

I have both. With the twist rate of your barrel I would go 223.

Thanks all for the replies. I've been mulling then over and I think I'm going to go with the 222. The extra performance of 223 would be nice and it would be nice to have less neck growth of the AI also.
The 9 twist would be nice in the 223 and maybe seems like a waste but, Something not so common is more of what I like. I think the 40 grainers zipping along at 3600 or so will do everything I want. This project is going to have to wait until I close on my house but, it gives me something else to look forward to and dream about all winter. I thought about the 221FB but, I would like to have one with a heavier barrel contour and I don't have a reamer either. I also would like to use a single shot like a stiller predator or maybe something a little beefier. Last edited by andy221; 10-29-2015 at 01:20 AM. |
