Default 17-204 velocity questions

Hi guys,

I have a 204 and a lot of brass I was thinking of turning into something else. The 17-204 makes a lot of sense for me, however I have a 17 Remington as well. I guess there’s be nothing wrong with having two 17s

Questions are this....

What kind of real world velocity are we talking with a 17-204 with a 24” barrel and a 30gr bullet?

Same question with an 18” barrel?

Few free to post your favorite powder as well.

Thanks!

Justin - from what I've seen from my guns, the 17-204 has about a 300 fps advantage over the 17 Remington.

I'm getting around 3,900 fps in 21" 17-204 (Think it's really closer to 20.5") using BG. My 20" 17 Rem is at 3,600 fps using IMR 8208. Both shooting 30's.

Perfect! That’s what I’m looking for.

Thank you sir!

I was getting around 3950fps out of a 21 11/16 rem 700 factory rechamber. That’s with varget, hornady brass and cci 450 primers. I’ve backed down this year and am likely somewhere around 3900fps.

And yes you need one haha. The performance on coyotes matched with no recoil and low noise is really pleasing.

My gunsmith also added a wolf spring and I haven’t used one before but I could swear I can feel a difference when hunting. Like the time between pulling trigger and critter tipping is immediate.

Got 4070 fps out of a 26 in Krieger, with 30 golds, that was a few years back, maybe with a new powder it could get more. Some were saying they got 4300 fps. My gun seemed pressure sensitive compared to what some people have. But I do not like to push limits.

Sorry Ken I had to look it up too, I also wrote it poorly. A Wolff extra power firing pin spring makes the strike faster and more powerful. All I know is that maybe it’s imperceivable to tell the difference but I think I do feel the difference. Only $8 and you can do it yourself.

Thanks for the reply/info on the Wolff spring. I am looking into a PacNor barrel upgrade for a 17-204. Hope to shoot 30 grainers through it, and hope that the gentleman now making the 30 grain golds will supply a great product. We will have to see what the results are of others trying them...

Thanks again,
Ken

I'm getting right at 3950 fps with the discontinued 30 gr. Bergers, out of my 20.5" Lilja barreled 17/204. I've got an order in for some of the new Golds, but haven't gotten them to try yet.
I run 25 gr. bullets in my .17 Rem, so I don't have a comparison for ya from it.

Default BC of those 17 caliber 30's

Just wonder what ballistic coefficient numbers you guys see with those 30's?
