Default Shooting Berger 55 grain (.20 cal.) from a .223 case?

Is anyone shooting the Berger 55 grain VLD .20 cal. bullet from a .223 case? If so, what velocity are you getting? I would like to get some idea what kind of velocity I can get shooting the Berger .20 cal. 55 grainers with a 8.5 twist barrel in .20 Tactical and a 23" barrel.

Thanks,

Jordan

I tried them in a standard 204R with an 8 twist.

This particular 8 twist wasn't quite enough to reliably stabilize the 55 though
Velocity was 3300 with a stout load of TAC.

just doing load dev for a 204 with 55g bergers in a 27" 1:8 twist barrel.

Really impressed. 26g of AR2206h (Hodg 4895) giving 3300 fps and no signs of pressure yet. Sweet spot seems to be around 3250 with 3 shot 100m groups going around 0.2"

The 55g berg has a BC or 0.38 so about the same as 6mm 87vmax and a 243 is hard put to get the 87 going at 3200 so the 204 shooting 55g is going to be much flatter shooting than I thought!

That 55g VLD is probably the only one thats light enough to expand on small same. 95-105 vld's are no good on light game in the 6mm.

The updated bc for the 55 is .354 and optimal twist is rated as a 7.

Using an 8 twist 204 sized case might work if it's not too cold out but my guess is you're compromising a substance amount of the BC of that bullet using it in a small case.

I personally think the 55 is geared more so for the big 20s like a 20-250 or a 20x47L using at least an 8 twist.

My 20-250 with a 9 stabilized well until it was below about 35 degrees. Then accuracy began to suffer

I believe the 8 twist 204 I have also had a hard time with the 55. The 50 Berger is amazing in the same gun. Wish they still made them. Unmusigs work very well in place of the Berger.

I shoot 55's in an 8 twist 20BR BUT with a short barrel. I get 3240fps and its been stable when I shot it. Never shot it in really cold temps. Hopefully I get to this winter.

5X45AI,.20 Practical AI or.20-.223AI your choice. 28" 8 1/2tw 55 grain Berger Reloader 17 3640 fps MV. Very accurate and great terminal ballistics to 600+ yards. I come out of hibernation in April and back in on Thanksgiving day so cold temperatures have not been verified. Most shooting is done in the 600 feet above sea level.
