EIther would work, if you would like a repeater, then a rifle that was for a 221Fb would be best.
A rifle in 17 rem, could make a fine single shot. |

OK good, I would always want a repeater so then I need to stay on the hunt for a 221 it sounds like.
When I said I had reloaded for a 17, I should have specified 17 Rem. I've had no experience with 17 Rem Fireball but I certainly wouldn't think it would be louder than the original 17 Rem. The one I was working with in 17 Rem was a 700 BDL just like my 222, so a 24" barrel - not 26. I guess a 221 in a 22" barrel (700 LVSF) will be every bit as loud as my 222, but I think the extra energy against coyotes could be worth it. Thermals also don't tell you much about any tall grass/brush you might be about to shoot through either, which could be another reason to lean this more in the .224 versus 17's direction. I could still go 17 Rem though if I happen to find one of those first. It just seems like 17 Rem Fireball may be a little more difficult to supply in terms of brass. |

Hmmm....
I've shot and loaded for a bunch of 17 Remington rifles since the early 1970's, and every one of them has been characterized by a very loud crack when they go off. Not a boom.... a loud crack... The 17 Remington is certainly not a cartridge that I would describe as quiet. Different, but not quiet. I too have had people at rifle ranges walk over to where I'm shooting one to ask what it is I'm shooting. In every instance, no one stopped by to tell me it's quiet. -BCB

To me, the loud 'crack' is due to the velocity of the round, not just the amount of powder being burned. The crack from the 220 Swift and the 17 Remington are a step above. I think of that like seeing the shock diamonds from a supersonic jet, the more shock diamonds the faster the exhaust stream.

I get what you are saying. To me the 204 is louder than a 22-250... it's a higher pitched crack, versus a lower pitched boom.
I found a kind gentleman willing to sell me a 221FB. Already brought in some Lapua brass, and will have a couple of boxes of Nosler 40 FBHP's arriving later this week to do a little barrel break-in work & sight-in with. I'm excited! |

In my opinion the best small caliber setup in a R700 is a 223 WSSM. I have a rifle that can go between 510WSM, 7WSM, 7mm WSSM, and 223 WSSM with a barrel swap. These all feed from the same 10 round magazine and use the same magnum bolt face.
I have all my other small caliber stuff in smaller guns, like a M38. |

If I recall correctly, a former member by the name of Sicero (Kenny Pond) used to campaign a 17 Remington in the prairie dog patches with a Hodgdon-recommended downloaded charge of H4895. He would pretend it was a 17 Ackley Hornet and fire it all day due to low barrel heat.
