Default not small cal at all

Quite some years ago I bought a Rossi 92 in 454 Casull. They sent very few of these rifles to Australia and I think they're discontinued now. I'm very happy with the performance.

It was a bit tricky getting a red dot scope in front of the action but its done now. One thing about the Rossi is that the original timber in the stock is terrible. I think think its not much better than willow with some stain on it. So I had my stock-maker cut a new stock out of a nice piece of walnut. He left the comb high so I could cut it down to whatever height suited me but I never cut it down. When my cheek sits on the comb I'm looking right down that red dot.

I've done quite a bit of pig hunting with it and up close its deadly. Even took it overseas to a hunt in South Africa and couldn't find a warthog big enough to hold a 300 XPT bullet in it. All were full pass throughs. I've only recovered one 300 XPT from a big sow here in Australia. She was shot in the bum running away and we found the bullet between her jaw and ear.

I know this has nothing to do with small calibers but I'm amazed at how those big heavy bullets penetrate. For the record factory Hornady 300gr loads clock a tad over 2000fps. But with ADI powder and my hand loads I can't get much over of 1900fps which is still very hard hitting.

It cost a fair bit to get the stock cut and that's why I only have a cheap bulky Tasco pro point on it. But hey, it does the job.

Anyone else have one of these?

I really kick myself for not picking one of those up before they were discontinued. talk about a powerhouse. you can get near trapdoor 45/70 performance from those bad boys and have twice the capacity.

Do you guys have lil gun over there? that's what most use to get top velocities I want to say.

I had a very early R92 (when they were imported by Puma) and man is it a nice rifle. the wood on those was very nice compared to the late models. My Stepdad only owned pistols (38's and 357's) and was wanting a rifle. he was going to get a 30-30 then I offered it to him and told him it would hold more ammo and uses bullets he already owned so he jumped on it. The previous owner found an old Winchester 3 leaf sight for it which was a nice touch.
