Default Jackets

There is a fellow on castboolits goes by pipe fitter, that has 2500+ jackets that are a bit small for a normal 22 caliber. He sent me a few, they will not take a .187 piece of wire. They measure .566 long, .223" OD, and .180" ID. Good price it seems.

.021 thick wall, pretty heavy duty. .566 will make light bullets. Looks like you would need .170 wire for the cores.

I think there may be a few issues with these numbers. The jacket should be about .220" before the core goes in. The wall thickness is a bit out there for a .224" projectile. Have you actually made anything out of them?

The fellow selling them told me of the size on the jackets, that's why I asked him to send me a few. They are as he measured and I measured the same.

I received a few to try also. I am thinking of using lead shot as the core and using a full diameter core punch to seat the lead just above the top of the jacket. Should make a nice hornet bullet. The jacket will be thick so not sure what kind of expansion there will be but the lead shot should break apart on impact. Hoping to put a few together in the next week or so.

Ok, so not a Hornet bullet. It ended up about 55 gr. Lead shot core with a 6S ogive finished with a lead tip die. The jacket as it was was tight in my core seat die so I ran it through a de-riming die for 22 cases first. So it is possible to use these jackets, just depends if the cheap price is worth the bit of extra work.

First picture is how I seated the core. I don't have a small enough punch to go inside the jacket so I used the point form punch which is a perfect fit in my core seat die. Lead is seated to just above the jacket.

Maybe, the seller told me they were now sold. I just thought I would share a technique for using odd jackets.

Reed maybe able to draw them down to use for 17 and 20 cal bullets while also making the walls thinner.
