Thanks for the compliments guys, I appreciate it!
Thank you Hal. I miss my dad every day, and I sure do wish that he would have gotten a chance to shoot one of my rifles... I build just a couple of rifles a year chambered in my 300 Jr. cartridge, but everyone who has one seems to love it. With my first one, even at 3,000 rounds, on a good day, that gun would still shoot an inch or less at 300 yards when I did my part. I always kept the barrel clean, never let it get hot from shooting, and as soon as the last round of the day was fired, I would coat the bore with a "mix" and kept it wet till I got ready to go shoot again... Also, with just this cartridge only, I would only put it in a 30" or longer barrel. Understand that i chamber for over 500 different cartridges, and something I found quite unusual or interesting about the 300 Jr. and no other cartridge, is that it prefers one powder and one powder only! Never have I seen this with any other cartridge... Just for the heck of it, when I built my 300 Jr., using a Lilja 3 groove barrel, 36" in length, plus a 5" muzzle brake that I made, I shot Sierra's 110 gr. Hollow Point just too see how fast I could push it, and once I exceeded 4,000 fps., I was quite happy with it. I did manage to shoot a crow in the center of his breast at a little over 200 yards, and that was the first time I ever saw anything discintegrate! And on top of that, I watched it happen through a 40 scope, and that in itself was quite fascinating... More pictures to follow as work progresses! Last edited by DAVID; 04-03-2018 at 01:49 PM. |

I set the action up "between centers" so I could re-drill and tap the base holes to the larger 8-40 screws...
Then I modified the base for the larger screws as well... And last, since my customer wanted the muzzle brake to be left oversize, I made one for this build that is 1.250" in diameter. I went ahead and made 2 more brakes that are 1" in diameter, since I already had everything set up on the milling machine... More to follow in the next couple of days... |

Two Encore Handgun barrels that I built and put muzzle brakes on, one is chambered in 308 Winchester and the other one is in 6mm Bench Rest...
Since these barrels are finished and shipped, I should be able to spend more time on the rifle build... |

Before cutting the barrel and adding one of my muzzle brakes, I went and test fired the gun before proceeding any further.
Starting off with new Norma brass in 280 Remington, the case is expanded to .35 caliber, then necked down to .30 caliber to create a secondary shoulder. The round is then loaded and fired in the guns chamber. You now have what I call my 300 Jr.. Neck length is .220... I'll take the gun back apart tomorrow, cut the barrel to 30", thread it, crown it and add a muzzle brake... |
