Honest average group size
Ok all you TC Contender carbine guys...
Wondering what your average honest group sizes are (5 shot 100 yard) in the 17FB or other similar 17? I am just wondering if I am chasing a phantom... If you want to tell me "a friend" is shooting xxx size group" and it is an honest xxx" size group, I won't quote it as YOUR group! Thanks in advance |

.17AH -- on a good day, you can cover the 100 yard groups with a dime, sometimes smaller. On a not-so-good day with the same load, maybe an inch or more. Changing loads often creates a whole new ball game.
One thing to watch for with Contenders -- any amount of pressure on the forearm will affect groups, so try to get a consistent rest. |

Honest average group size
MGM 24" 17MIV barrel, 25 gr Hornady HP, AA2015 powder, RP reformed .221FB brass, Remington 7-1/2 primer: Quite a few 5-shot groups sub-half inch at 100yds. Not "all day long" but the larger groups were usually my fault. Good shooting, Vic

22" MGM 17 WSM stainless bull barrel.
Never shot over 3/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yards and I've shot a bunch of groups. Average I would say is .6" for 5 shots at 100, with many in the .4" range. Float the forearm and make sure it isn't making contact with the sides of the frame. Best group at 200 yards was .78", but only 3 shot group. I've only shot a few at 200yds. I also have a ".17 Screaminweasil" 23" bull barrel (factory re-chamber from .17 HMR), that shoots 1/2" or less average at 100yards. It's a 222-30 degree variation necked down to .17, chambered 15 years ago when O.T.T> was still a business. |

.25-1.00
My Bullberry 17 Ackley Bee with three different loads goes .25-1.0". Average for it's best load about .60.
Fantastic little truck gun! Do notice on chucks the 25 grain load hits much harder. Mike. |

Thanks guys. I am just sorting out my first loading with this caliber and new to me barrel. i have a bullberry hanger, it is an MGM. I have 30 Remington brass, am using FGM and 20 grain vmax, cleaned pockets and chamfered necks, and see better groups on second firing . H322 up to 19.5 grains, where it shot best, no pressure signs.
(First firing SUCKED). Got a lot of double grouping. I do note that either it fouls or heats, because by the time I hit group #4 (20 rounds) it sucks, regardless. It helps to know that 3/4 inch is OK. I am used to shooting 40X's in 222 and 22-250, and a BR gun in 6BR and 22PPC. So when I see 1 to 1 1/2 inch groups i sorta wanna vomit. Just kidding. I had one group (a double group 3/4 inch apart) that if together would have been under 1/2 moa. Three touching, two touching. 3/4 inch apart. Otherwise, a lot of stringing and generally all over. No wind on the flags, dead calm evening humid and 80. I am using bushing dies, BTW, doing 3/4 of neck. |

settle on a good load.
Then sort thru ALL the bullets in the wts you want to shoot. That's the only way to do it. After that, IF you still want to play more games tinker with powders, primers and ovl's.
