.17AH Load Info, fire forming with Lil'gun & 296
Hi Guys,
I have a .17AH built on an 1885 Winchester low wall that I have never shot, I also have 200 cases ready to fire-form and I have a pound of Lil'gun and a pound of W296. I have read some posts on this and it seems that these two powders are some what dangerous in the little .17AH, is this true? Some say .2 grains over and Ka-Boom, others say .5 grains too little and Ka-Boom, Should I just order some other powder? Does anyone here use these powders in their .17AH and lived to tell about it? Help me out and tell me the real truth before I blow my fool head off. Thanks, Marcos (elalto) P.S. Bill K, you were right about the lead free bullets in Cali, 40 grain copper/lead Sierra FBHPs are shooting great in my 1-16 tw combo 16/222 rifle. |

elalto, you should be able to find data for W-296 and LilGun. Hodgdon's site has data for LilGun, strangly none for W-296. Assuming you find some, you may blow a primer or two, but likely won't blow your head off. In the long run, I think you'd be better off finding some AA-2200, AA-1680, N120 or IMR 4198 to work with. A case just about filled to the bullet with IMR4198 fireforms real nicely, and you can't overload with that.

fire forming with Lil'gun
I was FF with little gun in my 20ah and was losing 2 out of 20 cases to a crack along the side. I have switched to 1680, but haven't been back to the range. so I don't know yet if it is going to help or if that is my normal loss ratio.

Reed's Ammo has 17AH Formed Brass. It may save you a few headaches.
.17 Ackley Hornet Brass Item #: 17AHBRASS This is fully formed .17 Ackley Hornet brass. We do suggest FL sizing prior to loading to ensure the brass is fitted to your chamber. This is not .17 Hornady Hornet brass, |

which brass are you planning to use? You need to be real careful with hornet brass. Case capacity is much different from one brand to the other. Win 22 hornet brass holds about 13 gr lil gun to the top. Rem holds about 14 gr. That's quite a difference in such a little case. Start low and work up!
FWIW I use H4198 to FF 17AH. Lil gun blew primers bad. |

All,
Thanks for your replies, I have taken your suggestions and done a little more research and have decided to do the following: All of the data I could find told me that Lil'gun starting load was 9.4 grains for a 20 grain bullet and 10.0 grains was max. I then looked at the burn rate chart and saw that W296 is just a little bit slower than Lil'gun so I decided to load 9.6 grains of W296 and top it off with a Starke 20grain hollow point. I think I will be OK, the load should be about the same as the starting load of Lil'gun with a little safer powder. I plan to go the range next week and will report my results. By the way, I looked everywhere in my county and could not find the 1680 in stock, I will keep looking. Thanks for all of your input. Marcos (elalto) |
