Default .17 Remington

My .17 Rem has been sitting in my safe for a long time. I want to take it as part of my PD arsenal this year. I’m looking for some powders you have had success with using the 25gr Vmax. Thanks!

I have used and like W760/H414 with 25VMAX. I also have used W748, and currently have some loads to test with IMR 4320 and maybe AA2700. My 17 Rem is a L461 with a 1:10 Shilen pencil barrel. When I am paying attention, it shoots around 5/8" for 5 at 100yds, and in the fields, I can usual go around 75 rounds before accuracy drops off. I do alternate rifles/calibers to let things not get too hot.

When I had a 17-223 in a L461 I used H4895. Hornady's Data Reloading site has loads with various powders. You might give H335, CFE 223 or one of the 4895 powders a go. Bill K

23.5gr to 24.5 of IMR 4320 should yield some great accuracy and mild pressure. Work up to that of course, as your rifle is an individual.
Win 748 worked well for me also with the 25gr V max.
IMR 4320 was exceptional though in my CZ.

Quickload shows IMR3031 to be a good match.

Default Load Recipes for .17 caliber

I was starting to research loads for a .17-222, which sits somewhere between .17 Fireball and .17 Remington. I did a bunch of searches and here are the recipes that I found for the 25gr bullets (top half of page) and 20gr bullets (bottom half of page). These recipes come from both the Powder manufacturers and Shooters. You will see powder type on the left and loads for the .17 Rem on the far right column of page. Whatever you do confirm, if possible, with the powder manufacturer the specific charge weights that they recommend. As always start slow.

24.5 Varget, 25gr Berger match yields sub quarter inch accuracy at 100 in several local CZ's. Never could get the 25gr Vmax to do very well.

17 Remington and IMR4320 has tenure as long as I can remember.

The newer bullets can be longer, and I suspect the older 17 remington rifles may be 10 twist. Newer barrels are usually 9 twist I hear and handle the newer, longer bullets a bit better. With that said, a 10 twist barrel and the right bullets, is a good thing still; depends what is in the stack.

Guess one will just have to try the new bullet and powder out, I think a little speed might be good within reason of course.

Tis hard to beat the old centerfire by Remington, feeds well, does everything you want, powder capacity can be argued; but usually only in specialized environments. A decent cartridge.

Remington introduced the 17 Remington in 1971 with 10" twist barrels, but by 1974 the 9" twist was standard in the BDL Remington rifle. So unless your rifle is very early, it most likely has a 9" twist barrel.

Twist rate can be easily determined by a tight patch on a good cleaning rod that spins freely. Also, the barrel code on the BDL rifle should give you a good estimate on the year that it was built. By 1974, most reloading manuals that had 17 Rem data, Speer for example, were showing a 9" twist rifle being used for load work up with a 25 grain HP bullet. Since Hornady was the only bullet maker making a 25 grain HP bullet at the time, one has to assume that is the bullet that Speer used.

Hence, if it has anything but a 9" twist barrel, again, it is a very early 700 BDL/17 Remington combination. The 25 grain V-Max likely won't stabilize very well in the barrel even if its a 9" twist, but trying is the only way to really know if you can shot them. If its a 10" twist barrel, no way will they stabilize. At 17 Rem ranges, the V-Max offers nothing in the way of enhanced external ballistics over the 25 grain HP bullet. It just looks sexier to some in the 17 Rem case neck.

MY favorite load for the 17 Remington dating back to the mid-1970's involves the 25 grain Hornady HP bullet and IMR 4198 powder. I've never owned a 17 Rem rifle - both factory and custom - that didn't like the combination. I currently have three 17 Rem rifles, and they all shoot the same IMR 4198 load very accurately at just under 4K at the muzzle.
