H4198 v IMR4198
[SIZE=About to buy 8# of recently manufactured IMR4198 for use in my two 527s, a 222R and a 17HH. Both like a current lot of H4198. Reading up on the subject makes me believe these two powders are one in the same if they are recently made. Can anyone verify that?

They are not the same. Take a look at their website. I like H4198 myself.

I see that but also believe they must err on the safe side because so much pre Hodgdon IMR4198 is still out in circulation. It's my belief the older IMR is less sense than the Hodgdon. But by volume it's similar in pressure. This may be due to the original IMR having longer noodles.

The point is moot now. A local outfitter was going out of business and everything but firearms was 70% off. The powder had been sold when I got there. I did get 5 boxes of .172 Vmax for $6.30 a box, 450 .224 40gr Vmax and 8 boxes of Sierra 50gr 1320, 1330 and 1340. Rounded off with 5 #s of 4007 ssc.

This is correct. The 8# jug of IMR 4198 I bought a couple years ago says made in Australia but looks like the made in Canada, black, log shaped old IMR stuff. My 1# bottle of H4198 made in Oz is the olive green looking short kernel type.

there was 3 4198'd imr, Hodgeon and Hodgeon 4198 sc (short cut) . I like the way the sc metered and think all Hodgeon's is a sc now though I haven't bought any since they acquired imr.
always disliked the imr4198 as the powder measurer was always cutting powder granules in half.

IMR is an excellent powder for what you are loading. I "prefer" h4198, but many like imr 4198 more, so just work up a load and smile.
