Default Flattened pistol primers in 22 k hornet?

I'm getting flattened primers on my first reloads of fireformed brass. Wondering whatmay be causing it.

Hornady fireformed brass, flash hole opened up to 0.062
Neck sized only, no crimp.
CCI small pistol primers
45gr speer spire pt COAL 1.750
12.2 gr lil gun.

Wondering if the primers are flattening due to high pressure, don't think so.
If theprimers are just that soft that it gives me a false high pressure sign, or
If having no crimp is allowing the primer to jump the bullet to the land's causing a kind of hang fire, high pressure situation.

Wondering if I should try crimping with theSame loads to see if it continues or if I should try 7 1/2 BR primers to see if the hardness makes a difference.

Any thoughts or wisdom to share on this issue?

Some loads I have used small pistol primers, I never paid attention to them as far as a pressure sign.

Did you pockets expand too? That is for sure an issue

Pistol primers are a thinner cup designed for lower psi. I use them in .22H and they flatten, but have never pierced. I also us Lil gun which is about the lowest psi powder to use in the hornet. IF it bothers you try a sr primer. I honestly have never tried another primer, because I am very happy with the accuracy I am getting, but may when it warms up for fun.

If I were in your moccasins, I would drop the load a grain, maybe a little more, and gradually work back up in .2 grain increments and see what happens. No matter what caliber, what combination, flattened primers make me nervous. JMO.

Here's the primers.
The "complete reloading manual for the 22 hornet" has hodgdon data for the 45gr spire point at 12gr starting charge, 13.2gr max for the k-hornet.

I'm thinking these primers are just soft?

Perhaps the brass wasn't fully fireformed from the factory 35gr vmax loads. Case capacity has gained .5gr at least. That could have something to do with it. I've loaded a few up with the 7 1/2be primers to try out.

Got sold a box of WW SPP years ago instead of WW SRP, they sure flattened out when using them with my usual load in a 22 K Hornet, leaned to double check everything that goes into the bag at the gun shop counter.

Default reduce

Reduce one grain, move up in .2, use a 6 1/2 or a CCI 400.

BTW, LilGun is notorious for pressure spikes. I ran a K-hornet and you are at my max load right there....sure manual sez more, internet guys say more, you gun may be yelling LESS.

What does that load Chrono??
That will help determine if your getting too warm. Looks like pressure to me, I know other guys who find anything over 12.5grains of Lil Gun in K hornet blows primers...........regardless of what the manual says.

MONTDOUG..........you've seen this before

I'd get out the Chronograph.........buy one if you don't have one. Also, I'd lower the powder charge .5 grain minimum........but your not going to find out much without a chrono.

I use 'book max' loads of AA1680 in my two K hornets and don't see any primer flattening or cratering as your pics. I too use the CCI 500 primers. You are at pressure.......I'd proceed with great caution.
