Default Ruger releases more options in 77/17 WSM

New just recently is a 20" sporter version of the Ruger 77/17 WSM.

Now, I see a heavy barreled laminate version of the 77/17 WSM with 18.5" varmint barrel.......

Hmmmmm.......I'll probably end up with one, to keep my 24" Walnut Varmint version company of course!!

And with a retail price of $1069 it's sure to be a top seller.

They're sure a nice looking piece and hopefully they've fixed the trigger in these things. Kinda suck to spend a premium for just a rimfire, then have to spend even more to get a decent trigger.

I asked at a local haunt of mine about the 20" gun yesterday. I was told $675-700 plus tax. I was just curious and wasn't buying . He told me it was showing available thru one of his distributors. 3 days...

No one pays sticker price for a Ruger.

Best I could find on the 18.5in barrel version was $750 delivered. They're a really sweet looking little gun but I think that is still just way to high for a Ruger rimfire and you'll still need to fix/work on the trigger.

They're definitely winner in the looks department though.

Rugers aren't for everyone.

I, and many others, would pay $750 for the Ruger vs $450 for a Bmag.

$300 premium for a "Real Rifle".........that I'm going to keep forever, is a drop in the bucket.

Buy once cry once they say.

With the Ruger your not buying just a rimfire rifle...........you're buying a "centerfire style rifle" that shoots a rimfire cartridge.

I take it you don't have, nor have ever had, a Ruger 77 rimfire of any config?

Or maybe, you just got a bad one..........

Or maybe, you just read too must crap on the internet.......

I can't see how anyone who has actually held/shot/looked at/hunted with.....a Ruger 77/17 WSM can prefer a B mag. To each their own, I guess.

I have several Ruger 77 rimfires in various cartridges, and they are all shooters.

Like I've said before, Rugers just need a little love and the trigger is a 10 minute fix.

I am happy to see Ruger stepping up to the plate and offering more options in their lineup. It's also nice to see them embrace the .17 WSM, offering several versions.

It's not personal, but I don't think anyone in the precision world views Ruger rifles, of any kind, as a precision instrument.

I've actually spent a good amount of time behind a Ruger 77 rimfire. My dad has a Ruger 77 that was once a 22mag and we changed it over to a 17 HMR with a Lilja 17 HMR drop in barrel. The comb on the Ruger 77 factory stocks is pretty low and his didn't have the prettiest piece of wood on it so it now wears a Boyd's coyote laminate Pro Varmint w/adj cheek piece. It turned out VERY well and shoots pretty darn good.

You'll get no argument out of me about the fit, feel, and style of the Ruger 77 rimfires over the Bmag because it's a slam dunk, the Ruger wins, but just because they look and feel better than the Bmag certainly doesn't make them a winner and they are far from being a precision shooter. You don't see a lot of semi custom rifles built off Rugers.

We all know the Bmag is an odd ball and will likely never win a place in anyone's heart with regard to style, but I don't think Savage is trying to market it as anything other than what it is, an economically priced rimfire rifle, and at best, the Ruger only shoots on par with the POS Bmag so what does that say about the Ruger.

For me, their just rimfire rifles for smashing rats, I worry about accuracy first, style points second.

The only Ruger trigger I've worked on in the past maybe 10+ years was on a stainless light-weight All Weather in 204 Ruger. It felt gritty so I got out some stones and after about 15 minutes, it was in the good department. I never invoiced myself for the time so I'm not sure how much I might have spent if I had............

The trigger on my 17 WSM breaks consistently at 34 ounces with no creep or grit. For a hunting rifle that works just like I want it to. And Rugers are hunting rifles. They make no bones about being a bench rest rig with ultra-light triggers.

As for the infamous Ruger inaccuracy, literally the most accurate rifle that I've ever bought is a Ruger Hawkeye blue walnut with a sporter weight barrel in 220 Swift. Anyone who has ever seen it shoot or has shot it themself is amazed at its accuracy. My statement about it being the most accurate rifle I own includes quite a few custom guns and custom triggered rifles that I own. And the trigger on it is almost 3 pounds but it breaks like glass.

No factory rife is perfect in all cases, but I'd take the 220 Swift Ruger against just about any of the non semi-custom (read Cooper, etc.) factory shelf competition, maybe excluding older/used L and A series Sako rifles. I haven't been bit yet by Ruger and I own more than just a few going back to the Model 77 tanger days and old No 1's on up to the more modern stuff. One novel one is a quite heavy Model 77 African in 223 Remington...... It just makes a bang noise when you pull the trigger and it hardly moves otherwise..............

Years ago I bought two Ruger 77's in 284 Winchester just because of the cartridge. Ruger put them out to see if their might be a renewed market for the 284 Win cartridge. One of them would not shoot 140 grain 7MM bullets to my liking even though it shot both lighter and heavier 7MM bullets just fine. After playing with it for awhile, I sent it to PacNor and had it re-barreled in 6.5-284 throated for hunting purposes with a light weight barrel, and it is still a favorite of mine. This was long before the 6.5-284 target days. The other Model 77 tanger in 284 Win is still NIB......

It says that Ruger prides themselves on a total package........good enough accuracy.....often times exceptional, style points, solid built actions, integral base/ring system, best rotary rimfire mag design on the market, and crappy "lawyerized triggers"......all backed by an American Company with the best warranty and customer service in the business. (How's that for a run-on sentence)

Sometimes, you pay a little more for a well rounded unit.

Nothing personal at all.........except for preference.
